View Full Version : Frolf vs. Disc Golf
Recently I've heard and/or seen disc golf referred to as "frolf" by a few people. Just curious as to thoughts on this, is it common in your area? Obviously "Disc Golf" is the correct term since we have the PDGA and not the PFA but there are apparently some people that believe the opposite since I've seen Disc Golf crossed out on some tournament flyers and Frolf written over it.

I saw them say "frolf" on tv. I was watching "the Office" season 3 and the one charecter was really into it and said he started his own league at some college. I never heard that term before today and definitely will never use it. Its still golf, just with discs...

"Frolf" has been a term that's been in use for a looonnnggg time. First time I heard it on TV was back in May 1997 during a Seinfeld episode titled the "Summer of George" where basically George wants "frolf" (frisbee golf) to become his new passion.
I remember watching the episode and laughing thinking that I was in on the joke and the term "frolf" would go over most people's heads. Apparently, it's a commonly used term up here in the Northeast (i'm in the Buffalo NY area).
Good episode (weren't they all!)
from the script:
George: Severance package...The Yankees are giving me three months full pay for doing nothing.
Jerry: They did it for three years. What's another few months.
George: I'm really going to do something with these three months.
Jerry: Like what?
George: I'm gonna read a book. From beginning to end. In that order.
Jerry: I've always wanted to do that...
George: I'm gonna play frolf.
Jerry: You mean golf?
George: Frolf, frisbee golf Jerry. Golf with a frisbee. This is gonna be my time. Time to taste the fruits and let the juices drip down my chin. I proclaim this: The Summer of George!
ssejhill, the sign I mentioned in my first post was actually spotted at Chestnut Ridge. It was a tournament flier. I guess there are some people in the Buffalo area that are pretty serious when it comes to what the sport is called :)

I've played rounds with several random groups around here, and I heard the word "frolf" for the 1st time in person the last time I played Chestnut Ridge. Seems like a perfectly acceptable word - I know what it means when I hear it, but never really use it personally. I do often say "Frisbee golf" however when talking to those who don't play, just to avoid the "what's a disc...oh yeah, that..." part of the conversation.
Yea, I don't mind interchanging frisbee/disc but "frolf" is just odd :)

OK, I'll date myself here. Frolf or folf dates back to the days when the only discs we had to play with were Whamos. Most used the 141g, I prefered the Masters; it was 150g and had grooves on the bottom plate as well as the top. The term stems from adding the 'F' or 'Fr' from Frisbee to the word golf. It was the west coast standard until the beveled disc made its debut and they were called discs rather than Frisbees, Whamo held the trade mark on that name. OK, I'm old, and have been playing for 30+ years - you'd think I would be better. Unfortunately, the muscles declined as the discs got better.
On another matter I posted the first thread in the buy/sell/trade area. I'm trying to track down Royal Blue CryZtal Buzzzes and Challengers. I don't have a lot to trade, but I do have cash too. Drop me a pm if you've got some. Thanks, Jman

The kids used to call if frolf back in college, 10 yrs or so ago. Thinking about that, I went to SUNY Fredonia, south of Buffalo so maybe the Buffalonians have a thing for silly names. My buddies that I play with call it Disk Golf, and Ball Golf is just regarded as evil.

hey guys, just found this place now and wanted to say hello. been playing competitive disc golf for 14 years now around the world and thankfully frolf is limited to very small pockets of the population lol.
i would never play frolf. it's bad enough playing frisbee golf. "how do you hit the frisbee with a golf club?" "oh, it's a frisbee game? maybe my 5 year old would like to play" etc etc etc.
some people hit a golf ball, i throw a golf disc.

Well Golf got it's name because that was the sound it made. Wood clubs and shafts contact a ball that was made of stitched and wound ball. The resulting sound was "Golf." If we went that route, we would have to call Disc Golf, "Whoosh!" :D
Anyway, history lesson and jokes aside, I am not a fan of Frolf (Thanks Seinfled!). I am also guilty of calling it Frisbee Golf to avoid explanations. Sometimes brand names are hard to kill. I mean when was the last time you ask for a facial tissue? ;)
Firsbee sounds kiddish and Disc sounds mature and might I say even somewhat, manly (sorry ladies). "Disc" makes me think of some overly strong guy gearing up to spin in circles, hence Discus from the Olympics.
So I feel, Disc Golf and Disc Sports are the terms we should be promoting.

......you know, I don't mind using frolfing as a verb. Frisbee golf sounds like a game played with weak plastic that isn't going to fly far and possibly break when it hits the chains. Disc Golf sounds right, but it reminds me of ball golf, which I played for seven years and don't like comparison.
Disc golf > Ball golf. Their courses are all the same. They need carts. they have snooty aditudes. They got us beat with the cart girl that sells beer, but they dress funny.

I received a copy of Dicks Sporting Goods 'Game On' mag/advertising gimmick this week and there is a section on "The 2008 Joe-lympics", you know, Olympics that the average "joe" can participate in without being a world-class athlete.
One of the items is on "Frolf", the editors like the Frolf name because "it is more fun to say than disc golf, and its better than calling the game grisbee." They go on to use the PDGA definition of DG with a quick synopsis of the history of DG & the difference between a driver & a putter.
So play whatever name-of-tossing-plastic-to-a-target game you will:rolleyes:, DISC GOLF is growing and gaining national attention:D. Major retail chain first, then world domination:eek:!!!

I do sometimes say Frisbee golf because of name recognition. 30 years ago when I 1st heard of the sport (which we played with actual Frisbees) everyone I knew called it Frisbee Golf and it was not until years later that I heard the term Disc Golf. Neither name bothers me. This site is the 1st time I heard Frolf

when i was first introduced to the sport, it was referred to me as "frolf" i just thought that was what it was called. it seemed fitting: golf with a frisbee...frolf. when my friends and i are going to play we say frolf, but when i describe the sport to someone that's never played i say frisbee golf, it's something that i think most people would understand easier; i tell them that instead of a ball and a hole you have a disc and a basket. but when i discuss it with an avid player i'll say disc golf, because i know that frolf is a taboo term, that most disc golfers feel that it makes the game sound like it's just for kids.
i'm from the buffalo area, and play "the ridge" so maybe it is just a regional thing. but the more i play and talk about the sport with people the more i convince to go out and play, because it's a lot of fun, everyone you meet on the course is very friendly, and it's relatively easy to pick up (at least the basics, i'm still workin on my annie). i've found some people actually remember back before there were pins, and you just threw at a basket on a tree. so the sport has come along way since the 1970's no matter what you call it.

from wikipedia...
The word Golf was first mentioned in writing in 1457 on a Scottish statute on forbidden games as gouf, possibly derived from the Scots word goulf (variously spelled) meaning "to strike or cuff". This word may, in turn, be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning "bat," or "club," and the Dutch sport of the same name. It is often claimed that the word originated as an acronym for "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden", but this is strictly an urban legend.

Does it Stand for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden"?
1. Did the word "golf" originate as an acronym for "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden"? That's a common old wives' tale. Or, in this case, more likely an old husband's tale.
No, "golf" is not an acronym for "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden." If you've ever heard that, forget it immediately. Better yet, find the person who told you and let them know it's not true.
Like most modern words, the word "golf" derives from older languages and dialects. In this case, the languages in question are medieval Dutch and old Scots.
The medieval Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" meant "club." It is believed that word passed to the Scots, whose old Scots dialect transformed the word into "golve," "gowl" or "gouf."
By the 16th Century, the word "golf" had emerged.
Sources: British Golf Museum, USGA Library
source: http://golf.about.com/cs/historyofgolf/a/hist_golfword.htm
What is the origin of the word 'golf?' 1. top
The word 'golf' is not an acronym for anything. Rather, it derives linguistically from the Dutch word 'kolf' or 'kolve,' meaning quite simply 'club.' In the Scottish dialect of the late 14th or early 15th century, the Dutch term became 'goff' or 'gouff,' and only later in the 16th century 'golf.'
The linguistic connections between the Dutch and Scottish terms are but one reflection of what was a very active trade industry between the Dutch ports and the ports on the east coast of Scotland from the 14th through 17th centuries.
Some scholars suggest that the Dutch game of 'kolf,' played with a stick and ball on frozen canals in the wintertime, was brought by the Dutch sailors to the east coast of Scotland, where it was transferred on to the public linkslands and eventually became the game we know today.
Source; http://www.usga.org/questions/faqs/usga_history.html#1
There is no universally accepted derivation for the word 'golf.' One of the most common misconceptions is that the word GOLF is an acronym for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. This at least is definitely not true.
1. The first documented mention of the word 'golf' is in Edinburgh on 6th March 1457, when King James II banned ‘ye golf’, in an attempt to encourage archery practice, which was being neglected.
Before the creation of dictionaries, there was no standardised spelling of any given word. People wrote words phonetically. Goff, gowf, golf, goif, gof, gowfe, gouff and golve have all been found in documents in Scotland.
Most people believe the old word 'gowfe' was the most common term, pronounced 'gouf'. The Loudon Gowf Club maintains the tradition of this terminology

I personally enjoy the term frolf. not everything in life should be taken so seriously. when i am playing in a more competitive enviroment, or tournament, to me i am playing disc golf, pure and simple. but 95% of the time i'm just out enjoying a good walk, playing the great mental battle that comes with the game, when i am doing that, i call it frolf. i just find it amusing that the "serious" players are so offended by the term. because in all honesty, we are still just throwing plastic around in the woods. when people have never seen the sport and they see it (which was all of us at one point, me, not so long ago) they do see a bunch of grown men throwing "frisbees" at strange metal objects. so like i said, it's supposed to be fun, that's why i use the term FROLF.

What's worse is when one of the "pros" who draws a noob makes a scene of having drawn the noob. That's when the noob feels like ****, because he knows he is not wanted.
The main point is... Cali doesn't even sound cool... and, Frolf sounds worse. Let's get some respect in the sports world by not sounding goofy.

My brother got me into disc golf. My first course was Deming Park in Terre Haute, IN. All the local college kids there used the term "frolf". It seemed a bit hippie at the time, but I think they almost use it as a term of endearment for the sport .... "You wanna frolf later today?"; "Let's go frolf it up!"; "Frolfing after class today?" It helps me take some of the seriousness out of the sport that some people seem to place on it. These same college kids are also 1-3 disc-ers and usually shoot way below pro par (and have always made fun of "baggers").

just so we are all clear, i never made the comment that I thought we are losers. i made the statement that outsiders look in on the sport as a bunch of "losers." i was simply saying it works to our advantage, since it sort of wittles down the less desirable types from the sport. i disc as much as anyone, i don't have a job and my girlfriend is better than me so, trust me, i play a lot. and i do not consider myself or anyone else a loser. by the way i watched my girlfriend ace a hole at davidson college today. i followed by yanking one out in the brush, ha ha.

ssejhill, the sign I mentioned in my first post was actually spotted at Chestnut Ridge. It was a tournament flier. I guess there are some people in the Buffalo area that are pretty serious when it comes to what the sport is called :)
That's it right there. No one calls it frolf besides punk Ridge Rats. I'm sure they were being facetious.
I just did a nice clean up of all 18 holes there this Saturday and it almost looks like a nice course. Still cig butts everywhere though. Scored a +4 there yesterday! Best score on that course ever!

but homosexual sex and frolf have a lot in common. there's usually not a lot of courses in the same area so you have to travel to find some of your own kind, when you go for the hole there is a ton of shule in the way that can be hard to get through, you're wife probably doesn't want you going so you sneak in rounds without her knowing -- alright I took this a little too far...

Yea i use them interchangeably... it is sort of a hot button word... there are certain people I can't say it around.
I am sure its been said a lot here, but Frisbee is a brand name (Wham-O). I think the Disc over Frisbee is something that Discraft is secretly supporting. think about it, the first Ultimate game was probably played with Wham-O frisbees, thus Ultimate Frisbee. Then the Ultra-Star came to dominate, and they marketed it as a flying disc and only refer to the game as Ultimate.... Just sayin. I could be wrong about all this though, I don't know what was used in the first Ultimate game.
This makes me think of my parents who are foreign (filipino). Filipinos have this weird tendency of using certain brand names to describe items in general... All toothpaste is Colgate. All refrigerators are Fridgedairs. Oh... also it makes me think of the South where all sodas are refered to as Cokes. What kind of Coke do you want?

So, we have the frisbee. But it is not just a frisbee, it is a frisbee disc.
So, when you are disc golfing, you are really frisbee disc golfing, but to lazy to say "frisbee" (laziness is truly a huge factor in language development).
But, if you are really lazy (like myself), you drop disc and most of the rest of the words and are left with frolf -- a portmanteau far superior to the shortened form "disc golf".
Thus, us frolfers are simply more evolved, and lazy.
Consequently there's about 30 discs at my local frourse that I didn't feel like tracking down.

I proclaim this: The Summer of George!
if i remember correctly, george also aspired to eat a block of cheese in this episode

Surprised Tim hadn't heard of it, but maybe they only say it in the winter....

It is a put down, when someone calls you a frolfer they also say that your an unemployed pothead beatnik. Because that's the cliche.

Just the opposite here. You see alot of that around here in the Spring and Fall, but when its over 90 degrees around here in the summer, I can't get anyone but serious disc golfers out to play.
Try it when it's 115 .. yeah baby! ..

Being a central MN boy I'd rather play in 30 degree weather than 115, but I would still play if it got that hot. 115 in MN is incredibly brutal considering the constant humidity.

I think if you're growing up in the game, you can say frolf as much as you want.
If you plan on taking the game (not sport) seriously, than you should stop sounding like a n00b and call it disc golf.

Recently I've heard and/or seen disc golf referred to as "frolf" by a few people. Just curious as to thoughts on this, is it common in your area? Obviously "Disc Golf" is the correct term since we have the PDGA and not the PFA but there are apparently some people that believe the opposite since I've seen Disc Golf crossed out on some tournament flyers and Frolf written over it.
dunno why this thread got revived, but even the noobs around my parts don't use the term 'frolf'.
i'll give a derisive stare to anyone using the term 'frisbee golf', but it's still better then 'frolf'

Just golf. The other people play that weird "ball golf", or bolf, game. Mostly it's "discin" though.

now that you mention it, we usually just say golf too. Anybody that I would be playing with would never mistake me saying 'golf' for ball golf. I've never played ball golf, nor do I have any desire to.

I still say frolf all the time.
The owners of the local disc golf shop get seriously pissed when they hear someone use the term. They just need to lighten up. Disc golf isn't any more deadly serious than ball golf is. My 16 yo son thinks it is embarrasing when he hears someone say frolf but that is a typical teenage attitude, I know he will eventually grow up enough to not worry so much about what people think of stuff like that. It doesn't mean you are ignorant or stupid, it is just a game, why so serious? Maybe people think that is we all stop saying frolf more money will appear in tourneys?

I see it as Frolf is when your using 'Frisbee' brand catch discs like the avg joe at the beach and disc golf is played on a proper course with baskets and using proper Disc Golf Discs

I was introduced to the game as "Frisbee Golf" and "Frolf". Don't particularly like either name. "Disc Golf" is hard for me to say though. I can say "Disc" and "Golf" just fine seperately, but put them together and you get this weird pause/interuption in the middle.
I usually end up saying "DG" to other players, "Frisbee Golf" to non-players and "Dis Golf" for when I want to say "Disc Golf" without that weird pause.
Someone needs to find a better name.

I never, EVER use the term "frolf".
I do admit to saying "frisbee golf", as its easier for someone not familiar with the sport to grasp the concept. It doesn't really bother me either way, but I do call it Disc Golf.

'Frolf' seems like a goofy word so I dont say it. I heard the term 'Frolf' only after I started throwing. I probably would've never started throwing if it was only known as 'Frolf'.
I say disc golf (or Frisbee golf to the uninitiated).

When I tell someone that I play, I say "disc golf", if they look puzzled, I say "frisbee golf".

i used to use the word "frolf" and now i use disk golf, in my school a lot of people say "frolf" and i correct them and say "disc golf" and they say thats not right, i changed my words because my brother (discordye) was always correcting me and it got annoying so i changed, he also convinced me that it sounds more professional. its annoying for me to hear my younger siblings to say it but i think i can change them. lol. but yea, alot of people say frolf where i am from.
