I was just wondering if anyone putts with non-putters. I have tried many different putters, and I have found that my Star Coyote just seems to work better and feels much better in my hand.

Anyone else putt like this?

I use a Classic Roc outside 50 feet. Some say that the Classic Roc is like a putter, but I switch from a lob with my wizard to a standard backhand when throwing the Roc.

Just out of curiosity, how do you throw the Coyote?

I use a "Power Putt" I guess you would say. I put quite a bit of spin on it when I release it and it goes were I tell it to I don't lop it in, I throw it quite hard. I know I risk going past the basket, but that is the chance I take.. My putting has improved 50%. The Coyote just feels really good in my hand, and releases well.

midnightbiker I have been wondering the same thing I CANNOT put with a putter I have tried al least 20 different ones and none of them work I put with a star shark from 50-100 ft anf a star gator for anthing inside that I can make about 7out of 10 putts from 75 ft and anything inside 50 is about 98 percent so I put with midranges. that's my thought

This is not always the case...different people are effected by different things...but I find that as a general rule guys with smaller hands and/or short fingers tend to not like traditional putters because of the rim depth. Most drivers have a rim depth of 1.1 or 1.2 cm. A Coyote and a Shark have a rim depth of 1.3 cm. An Avair has a rim depth of 1.5 cm. A Wizard has a rim depth of 1.8 cm.

For me I used an XD as a putter for a long time due to that comfort. The XD and the Classic Roc are tweeners. They are halfway between a putter and a mid and they both have a shallow rim. I had to work with my grip for a long time to get comfortable with a putter, and the best true putter to do that with is a Magnet. The Magnet has a 1.4 cm rim depth, so it is not as deep as some of the other putters. Once I figured out putting with a fan grip with a Magnet, I was able to transition to an Aviar and Wizard pretty easily.

But...if you are hitting 98% of putts from 50 ft and 70% from 70 ft with a Shark, there is no reason to change. Stick with what is working.

The big thing that a real putter gives me is the ability to throw straight at low speeds and because of that low speed release I do not have to worry about missing the next putt. As my putting improved I have felt that being right under the basket for a second throw is now less important than the ability to increase my chance of making it on the first. I have decided that being 15 foot out should not be much different than being one foot out as far as the chance of making the putt. That is where the Classic Roc comes in. If I miss I am farther out than it I would have thrown my Wizard but at least I had a shot at making the first putt. If I am 10 feet out instead of undet the basket it should still be doable.

If you can sink 98% of your putts within 50 and 70% at 75 feet I would not even consider changing anything. If one of your 3 out of 10 putts does happen to fly past the basket who cares because you are you probably going to be no more than 50 feet away giving you a 98 percent second shot. I think most disc golfers expect to have to make two shots from 75 feet anyway and it sounds like you are making most of your 75 foot shots on first try.

Amazing numbers.
I guess I could make 98 percent inside 50 as well but I would have to shoot at least 99% of my shots in the 10 to 15 feet range and back up to 50 for my last one!

That's what it's all about, the feel and confidence.

Well, I tried my Coyote on the course today, and anything inside of 50 feet, it really didn't work, now from 125-50 it worked great as a long putter/approach. I brought my Banger Putter with me as a back up ,and its not good over 50ft,but inside of that, it putts great. I guess I have a good one, two combination I guess.

I use an Aviar out to about 15 feet. From 15-50 feet I use an Optimizer. For long putts I use an Aurora.

I like using a 180g shark for a lot of putts over 40'. I can still use my same putting style to set-up the shoot, which I am very comfortable with. The extra weight keeps me from over shooting. It just seems like I can focus in more on where I am aiming and not have to put some much effort into the distance. One down side I have found is if there is slopes near the basket. My shark will still skid and sometimes roll away a bit if I miss. On these type shoots I usually end of going with my aero. It is suppose to be a putter but I have always considered it a midrange.

When I started playing (4 yrs ago) my only disc was a champion shark. As I added discs to my bag I couldn't get the feel for any putter so I used my shark for a loooong time. Eventually I kept experimenting (and pretty much always hated the aviar b/c of the deep rim) and found the gumbputt. It just felt good in my hand. I have finally added an aviar to my bag for jump putts and putts in the wind. I have even used a hyzer wraith in strong wind to nail some putts.

All that being said I would consider putting the weakest part of my game and something I am still constantly changing.

I think the most important thing is just to putt with whatever works for you.

I came back to my Soft Magnet. It seems to work the best, and I am going to stick with it for a while.
