View Full Version : New Map Feature!
Hey guys,
After a decent amount of work I finally finished the Map Browse feature. You can finally browse courses through a map interface on DGCR.
It is similar to the PDGA map in the sense that you click a point and nearby courses are shown on it. You can also enter a zip code and it'll zoom you right to the center of it and show you the nearby courses. Clicking on a basket will give you a link to the course page, it's location, distance from the point you clicked as well as how many holes it has and what kind of landscape/terrain to expect.
As always, if you notice a bug just let me know. Also, if you have suggestions for stuff to add to the map interface or the site in general feel free to send me an email post it on the forums.

Where do we find the map? I may be dense, but I can't find it yet, and it sounds really cool.

Never mind. I found the Map feature when I clicked on a course. Duh!
Lowe,
Actually I was referring to this:
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/browse_map.php?mode=map
There are tabs on the upper right of the Browse (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/browse.php) page now so you can either browse by zipcode, holes, etc. or by clicking on the map.

What a SWEEET feature!! But I'm not sure I would have ever seen it if you hadn't told us about it. I wonder if some kind of Instructions page would help new users find these cool features?
BTW, how do the courses get added to the map? You don't do each one by hand do you? Or are they automatically added? I hope so.
Great job!

They're added automatically. As long as the course has a latitude/longitude then it will be on that map. So far all courses on the site do have lat/lon and I've been adding around 10 new ones a day when I can. If I can't find latitude/longitude for a course I'll usually follow the written directions on Google Maps and then pick a point that is my best guess as to the courses location.

Ultra sweet! What a great resource and way to add to get good info.

Bringing this topic back.. the map now has color coded pins corresponding to the number of holes each course has. You'll find the legend just below the map. There are 5 color, blue for less than 9 holes, green for 9, yellow for 10-17, orange for 18 and red for more than 18.

that's awesome man, i just found thailand haha good stuff. looks kind of lonely though with no other courses around. i just heard that a temp course opened up in seoul a few days ago. no further info though and i don't think there are any plans for permanent yet.
Yet another new feature :) If you go to the map browser you'll notice a box that let's you filter the results you get on the map. Only want to see 18 hole courses that are moderately wooded and very hilly? No problem! Have a preference for concrete tees? Add that to the filter too!
This feature was kind of tough to get working correctly so if you notice any oddities with it please let me know.
Enjoy!
Another add-on. On the left side of the map you'll notice a magnifying glass. Click that and you can drag a box on the map to zoom in on the area inside the box. After zooming in you'll notice that a magnifying glass with a "-" shows up. Click that and you can step back to your previous pre-box zoom level.
Let me know what you guys think. I thought it made zooming in on a particular area a little easier but maybe I'm in the minority here.

What is the best way to print a map? I just used Crtl-P, but it gave me everything on the web page, including the filter criteria. It would be nice to be able to print just the map by itself, and it would be ideal to have a title that has the state and the city where "pushpin" is.
You'd probably have to do it the way that you tried to and then edit the screenshot in a photo editing application to crop it, title it, etc.
