I will be taking a trip the first week of october, flying into San Diego thursday October 1st and flying out of LA saturday the 10th.
I will be going with my GF but still plan to get in as much disc golf as possible.
I will visit a friend in San Diego friday, saturday, sunday. We will likely play Morley Field (a course I love other than the long waits).
We will than shoot up to oxnard to visit my brother. I will be sure to play Coyote Point while there.
After a few days there I will visit a friend in LA
I won't be able to play every day, so want to get in the best courses possible. We also won't likely have our own car, so won't be able to hit a course on the way up to our next stop.
I plan on playing Morley, Coyote Point, and likely La Mirada, but was wondering what other courses I must play and any other suggestions/tips that you have about my trip or a course is appreciated. ( I enjoy scenery, well groomed courses, and having a course that is easy to follow would be helpful as well)
Thanks in advance,
Kwick

When I visited LA this past spring a buddy took me to Chavez Ridge DGC at Elysian Park and I thought it was an awesome course. Really senic with stunning views of downtown LA and Dodger's Stadium. The course map is pretty confusing, but once you're on the course it isn't too hard to follow. The locals there are also really cool.

Haven't played it personally, but lots of my friends back home love Emerald Isle in Oceanside (San Diego). While you're in L.A., it's a pretty decent drive but Sunrise DGC is on a ski mountain, and is 27 fun holes.

I live right here in So Cal so I might be able to help you a little.
Morley is definite must play if you are going to be in San Diego. Only downside is the long waits you mentioned. You could stop at Emerald Isle in Oceanside on your way out of SD. It plays on a ball golf course so it is a unique experience.
Good call on Coyote Point since you are going to be so close. Great course!
As far as the greater Los Angeles area is concerned, here are my rankings:
1. Sylmar
2A. La Mirada Backside
2B. La Mirada Frontside
3. El Dorado
4. Oak Grove
5. Chavez Ridge
6. Whittier Narrows
189. Huntington Beach (As you can guess from my ranking, I hate this course)
Sunrise is very fun and great scenery, but it is probably too far out of the way for you.
Feel free to PM me if you want more details or maybe want a playing partner to show you around.
Good luck!

I mostly agree with Flash though I like Huntington Beach better than he does. La Mirada and Sylmar are defiantely the best of the best in Los Angeles. After that I would go El Dorado and Huntington Beach. Maybe Oak Grove is in that second group but it could also be put in a thrid group with Chavez and Whittier. Oak Grove is about the history as they claim to be the Original. But if you are only playing a couple definately hit La Mirada and Sylmar.
Oh and so you know I am not just anyone saying these things, I only recently moved to Colorado from the Los Angeles area. I would play La Mirada just about everyday unless I decided to try something else. It was so nice living less than 5 minutes from La Mirada, I am going through serious withdrawls as there is just not that quality of a course near me right now.

You're going to hit Coyote Point at a great time. We'll have two 27 hole courses set up for our big annual tournament at the end of October. Remind me before you come out and I'll be happy to show you around the course.

Do you think Sunrise is still open in October?

Whoops, good point. I misread the op and thought he was going next week. I'm not sure when they pull the baskets.

Hey! Aren't we on a Disc Golf informational site right now?
**runs off*
OK. Here's what I found.
Closed from Nov. to April for ski season.

This would be my recommended itinerary - it works well from a travel standpoint:
From San Diego, first hit La Mirada (either or both courses). then shoot across the 22 and drop down to Huntington. Then go up the 405 to El Dorado. Then up the 110 to Chavez Ridge. Then up the 5 to Sylmar, and then scoot across the top of the valley on the 118, which will head you straight for Coyote Point.
Post your plan when the time gets near - you'll likely have lots of folks ready / willing to join you for a round or 3 :)

thanks a lot guys. this is exactly the stuff i was looking for
going to add emerald isle (can't imagine playing on a ball golf course, getting a cart, but can't pass up the chance)
going to add sylmar (thanks for this suggestion, can't miss this after reading about it).
Right now:
Must plays:
Morley, Emerald Isle (while in SD)
Coyote Point (while in oxnard)
Sylmar and La Mirada (based on reviews i think these two and coyote are right there for top 3 in socal)
Might try to get in Chavez and El Dorado
Once again i won't be able to play as much as I want, but even if i only hit the must plays, it will be a great disc golf trip.
Great call on seeing if the course was open. I'll have to check schedules to avoid tournies.
I will post my official plans closer to the date when things are coming together and i have car figured out, where i'll be what days etc.
i will also shoot some PM's to get some friendly rounds, always better playing with friendly locals.
On a side note, discraft has a deal getting misprint discs (only the stamp is messed up, not the disc) which I'm waiting on. The deal is a big hit with people here if you check the equipment forum (or my posts) and is worth checking out if you use Discraft or want to start.
thanks again for all of these suggestions

Yup. That pretty much sums it up. Except, I would put OG up there on the list above ElDo for the historic factor. Plus, it's close to Sylmar so you can get 2 courses in quickly (as long as neither burns down in the next couple days).
And... Ski Sunrise IS the BEST so-cal course. If it's not too far out of your way, definitely go there. Truly awesome!!! Plus, you'll get a day in some of LA's most beatiful mountains.

If you'll be anywhere near Irvine and have 20 minutes there is a short 9 hole course, Deerfield that is fun and real easy to navigate. It is almost always deserted and the tees and baskets are great. I would say all the other courses previously mentioned are great and bring your weed if you are so inclined to Morley. I was there this summer at 7:30am on a sunday morning and it was packed but everyone was smoking bowls on the benches while waiting. They all had their Medical Marijuana cards so all was well. I think Huntington is worth a play, if you just go counter clockwise its pretty easy to navigate, I prefer the top 9 over the bottom 9 at Huntington though.

I'd call emerald isles before you get your hopes up on the cart. Word is some jacka$$es crashed a cart and no carts for discers(what I heard). Even if you can't get a cart it's still awesome. I've played alot of courses in Cali and Emerald Isles is easily in my top 3.

If you can make it over the grape vine to bakersfield, Hart park has 2 courses that are absolute must plays..... Suicide flatts and Shark tooth mountain.
