I noticed today that "Maple Hill DGC in Leicester, MA" moved to #1 today, pushing idlewild to 2 and flipcity to 3. Who has played this course? Do you think its worthy of the #1 spot??

It has six solid 5's (although one is from the owner) and I've heard nothing but good things.

On a related note, I should probably bump up the review threshold required to be listed on there since so many courses now have more than 5 reviews.

My last trip to ma while playing Borderland SP, a man told me I should go play Maple Hill "because its the best in the state." and I was blown away by Borderland SP (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1033), so I figure Maple Hill (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=119) must rule. My next trip out to MA, it's must first stop.

It is an unforgettable course, gorgeous, challenging, and diverse, to be sure. It's not my personal #1, but I can see how it could legitimately hold the title, at least for a while. Just my two cents.

Another random thought -- Looking at the highest-rated and most-reviewed courses, I'm surprised not to see any from the upper Midwest (Minn., Wisc., & Iowa) on the list. Maybe those aren't as well-traveled by the DGCR in-crowd yet... but anyone who's played up there knows which ones I'm thinking of that stack up well against any national list. But according to the current rankings, I clearly need to get down to Kentucky to see what all the fuss is about...... Sounds pretty awesome down there!

I totally agree with you. Blue Ribbon Pines is a nice, nice course by anyone's measures
Perfectly manicured and challenging
and its 27 holes
With 100ft tall pine trees everywhere.

Noticed that too, sounds like a great course. STILL I find it hard to believe anything could be better than Flip City just based on the zillion of intangibles and the great story of it being owned, designed, created(28 years ago) and maintained by one guy out in the middle of no where. Some of the sub five star ratings were prior to the owner putting in the most amazing elongated cement tee pads.

I still wouldn't turn down an opportunity to play Maple or Idlewild!

wow, and I as I posted that, Flip City got a really lame review, hate to say. Oh the irony.

my cousin who lives in Northbridge MA says its amazing.

i went to college in Worcester (also near Leicester) and who knew that only miles away were amazing discgolf courses. Sucks that i didnt learn about disc golf until 5 years after i graduated

oh wait - Maple Hill opened in 2002 i was gone by then

It's hard to find (I bet impossible) anyone who has played as many of the top ranked courses and as many courses as I have, and I clearly have a different opinion than most on some courses, but Maple Hill is NOT even my top 10.

It's not all that well designed in my opinion, with a few holes bordering on insanity and luck rather than skill, too much chance. AMAZING set-up, scenery, land, water shots, signs and all that though. Definitely top 1% of all courses, but not the top course. It didn't even have all cement/rubber tees when I played it this year.

I need to get on ranking some of my other favorite courses in the Midwest from the past, clearly.

Well, there may be one other person... (hope that's not a sore subject).

I'm in the dark here, is innovadude in a competition to play a zillion courses?

wait a sec never mind, this goes back to the Gregg Hosfeld thing huh. If for some reason it is a heated competition, then I'll vote for Ben because he posts here more, plus he's the young buck. :) Isn't there another guy out there trying to bag a million courses too?

That was Alan "Upshot" Brown on the Play 'Em All Tour (http://www.playemalltour.com/index.htm). Sadly, his blog (http://playemalltour.wordpress.com/) says it's been postponed due to rising costs.

innovadude has definitely played more courses and yada yada than I have. But I've played quite a few myself and I totally agree with him on this one. I played Maple Hill last month for the first time and it totally DID NOT live up to the hype for me. It was a nice setting, nice course, etc, but not anywhere near my top 10 personally. I haven't rated it yet, but it'll probably get a 4/5 stars at best.

It was just kind of shaggy, I don't know how to describe it. I don't want to offend anyone who likes it, or the Southwicks or anything, but it just wasn't as great as people are saying. I figured that most of the people rating it so high have never really played a five star course, so they don't have anything to really judge by.

I'm glad you agree, GWILLIM, I know I'm not the only one. It is a great place, great set-up and still great course one of the best, but definitely not the BEST and not in the TOP TEN. People have to spread out more and see what else is out there.
I'm not really in a competition, I never intended to be and didn't know I was!
And starting at 375 vs. 833 is quite the disadvantage.
