Any kind of JLS (DX, Q, S) disc will do.

JLS = Just Long and Straight.

It has worked wonders for me for couple years as long you know how to throw JLS correctly.

Polaris LS or Star Kite, depending on the length of the shot.

garublador

It depends on how long and narrow. If it's narrow enough I'll throw a Roc no matter how long it is. If it's a bit wider I'll throw a DX Teebird.

170 Monarch or 164 Wildcat
I'll drop down to a Buzz or Stratus if it's really tight

Depends on length: Champ Leopard, Beat up DX Leopard, and Buzz.

I usually just throw a Roc. If it is wide enough that I think I can get away with a driver, I'll use the TeeBird.

At Conifer (8000 ft) the Roc is too overstable for a beginner to throw in tight tunnels. The Kite or Stingray are what I throw. Downhill the Stingray begins to show it's high speed turn, which I have to prepare for.

DeafDiscGolfer

Ok, forgot to think about the length...

For long range narrow tunnel distance, I would mostly uses the JLS discs.

For shorter range shots, I would use a good old Champion Cobra. Again, as long you know how to throw it correctly.

If you don't have Champ. Cobra (its hard to get one nowadays), then either Roc or Buzzz will do for you.

:)

Just pick a midrange disc and go with it. Staing in the fairway is far more important than distance in this case. Throw something that's going to go straight, stay straight, and not skip out of the fairway when it hits the ground. Also, the blunter the edge the less likely the disc is to bounce off a tree and sail into the woods. Try an FLX Buzz. I find that soft plastic is more likely to hit a tree and fall dead rather than simpoly change direction and sail into the abyss.

Star TL or a beat up Ching Roc. I have good things about the Cobra by Innova as far as a straight flying disc. Check it out: http://www.innovadiscs.com/discs/championCobra.html

Over 300' or with a low ceiling, I'll throw a slightly flippy Star Orc. Most anything short of that gets a Roc...unless its really short (less than 200'), in which case I'll throw an Aviar since it's easier to controll for me at that distance.

Long = Champ Valk, longer mid= DGA Squall, shorter mid= Buzz, short= Challenger. I carry the Squall because it is easier for me to control in the 250-275' range than the buzz. I really like the Challenger for anything up to 200'.

Depends on how far you can throw. We have a hole like that at my home course. 220ft to the basket from the tee. Only 20feet wide, and 12feet high to the tree line. I would use an Impact, or a Coyote. I played with guy who actually threw a Soft Magnet for that shot. It landed right under the basket.

TunaSled
09-21-2008, 08:50 PM
Champ Leopard is my first pick on most holes that are even fairly straight. If it's a real narrow corridor I find that my champ Panther 175 flies straight as an arrow when I release it right.

Midnightbiker
09-21-2008, 11:50 PM
Me personly, I use a Pro Valk if its over 220, and a Impact if its under that. Both go dead straight, 5 feet off the ground for me.

I would say a Buzzz up to 300ft and a leopard 320-350 with a slight hyzer to flip. The key is not to overpower, but to follow through smoothly.

ScottJB

It does indeed depend how long. Very short will be a Monarch for me, medium distance would be an Assassin, and long I'd throw this found, beaten dx Eagle which I think is a random spawn gift from the gods, as whatever has happened to it in its life it is now the straightest thing Ive ever thrown. And really long I would dial in the Excaliber, roll my wrist over and snap it as hard as I can.

i can't beleeive that i haven't posted in this yet... unless this is ANOTHER what disc would you throw thread.

for narrow shots i had a Ching Sniper that could not be outdone. but it is well beyond "seasoned" by this point. i still refuse to take it out of my bag though.

for this type of shot i have added a Roc to my bag and so far it is working well. there are a few other discs i would like to try though to see how well they would do. i've added both the discraft Buzzz and the Ching Legacy to my xmas list.

I must say for the straight and narrow I go to my slightly beat in DX Kite. You have to put a slight hyzer on it to prevent it from turning over, but if you’re just right on your release, it will do the straightest country mile you’ve seen in a while.

swarren1977

Alright a country mile might be a bit excessive, but nonetheless it will go straight and far.

I'll throw a leopard if there's any sort of tunnel. For those holes where there's just a basket in yonder forest, soft magnets from tee to chains. They drop fairly dead when hitting a tree, whereas a star or champ disc might ricochet 60-100' into "oh crap".

valkyriefb11
11-11-2008, 06:49 PM
For long tunnel shots I'll throw my champ T-bird. It holds a great straight line and gets good distance. Ive also had suprisingly good luck throwing my champ monarch through heavily wooded holes ... although that may just be dumb luck.

Champion Viking that is fairly beat up is what I used to use. Now that I have all these new discs, I have been trying the Star TL, Z and ESP Stalkers or a Buzzz depending on distance. I used to be able to hyzer flip my Champion Valkyrie sometimes for the distance tunnels....just kept it low and it worked pretty well. I do my best to avoid drivers on tunnel shots. Sharp edges of drivers seem to bounce much further off the fairway if they knick a tree compared to blunt mids and putters.

I'll add that if I had a magic bag in which of my discs were available in all plastics I would throw soft plastics like FLX or r-Pro to minimize bounce as well on those tight shots.

I haven’t taken the time to read all the replies to the original question, so I’m sure my response will overlap with others’.
I don’t like throwing drivers on any tightly wooded hole. If the tunnel is really tight I will reach for a stable putter or a stable mid.

For tunnels ranging from really tight to fairly open I would throw:
Stable putter (dozens to choose from)
Stable mid (Comet, etc.)
Overstable mid (Roc, etc.)
Stable fairway driver (like a Leopard or a Stalker, etc.)

Comets or Rocs are a good, safe bet. I don’t think I would ever reach for something faster than an OLF on a tunnel unless it was ridiculously wide.

Depending on length, I use my KC Pro eagle or Z stalker. Both fly straight but I tend to rely on my eagle for straight shots. Also use my very old and very beaten DX shark, although its turned into a very understable disc. Lose it to the right when thrown hard.

Pretty sound reasoning. I don't drive putters much for some reason but I usually use mids like a Nebula and a QMS for this. It's not the tightness of the tunnel that scares me as much as the thickness of the rough. If the rough isn't too thick I have no problem throwing Stalkers, TLs, Teebirds, etc. b/c I have a pretty good get out of trouble game.

Champion Panther 168g. Just give it a light snap and put the outside tip down. If I aim low I slide in for birdie, and if I put out a little more power or catch a glide I'm running at ace. If there's a headwind I'll use a max weight Champ Panther.

Depends on the ceiling. If I've got height to work with, a worn Wizard or a Roc. If it's longer, and theres a ceiling, usually something I can flip up (JLS, QJLS, Leopard, maybe a Pro Beast). If it's really long and the ceiling's low, I might forehand roll a Firebird.

Nice call. Other than a hyzer-flip I haven't seen anyone suggesting a type of throw- Only types of discs.

soft pro rhyno. If you don't hit a tree you can make it as far as any midrange. If you do hit a tree it will taco and hit the ground instead of bouncing off. However super soft rhyno's are hard to find.

I found the disc Redneck Machismo uses on long narrow straight tunnel shots!

A soft putter (wolito) is a great suggestion.
And Heelboycraig...I love your Fudgie The Whale avatar. That's just briliant.

Back to the thread, I would go with a Rindge or VP and if it's longer than 250' I'll go with a Z Buzz but I wouldn't throw a faster disc than that regardless of distance.

Short tunnel (150-200) = aviar
Medium tunnel (200-300) = Roc
Long tunnel (275+) = Monarch, Roc or possibly Buzzz

The last thing you want to do is throw a fast driver, hit an early tree and be 50+ ft off the fairway. I usually go with mid ranges or fairway drivers if the hole is especially long.

Check this one out. Believe it or not, I am standing on the tee. The hole is down and one the far left. This hole takes a tight hyzer shot . Its only 255 to the hole, the the tress in the fairway make it much harder. You can see the tree on the right there has been hit a few times. People that have real balls go for the shot straight for the basket through that gap. I have seen it done a couple of times. This is hole #7, same course:

That hole is not as hard as you think. Most of the newbies get a 5. I can recall one guy getting a 6 on that hole, but its rare.

I dont think i could predictably hit any line there and would need a nice tree deflection to give me an easier time.

I guess I could just softly toss 50 feet at a time and hope

Here in the Pacific Northwest, trees are pretty abundant, and some of the golf courses take advantage of this.
This is #17 at Twin Rivers Disc Golf Course, in Arlington, Washington.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2526/3918911854_de1c23817f.jpg
It's not long, but there really is only one lane between the trees that will successfully get you close to the basket. It follows the path, then goes slightly right, then straight, then left to the basket, through the trees.
The correct path splits trees only 6' apart at some points.

I finally parked this the other day with a new 166 Star Boss thrown lefthand forehand from a standing start.

I would have to completely agree with you. Star Beast is the way to go. I have a beat in X-Out that is just magic for this type of shot.

I've been parking this hole (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/view_image.php?p=course_pics/415/eb506233.jpg) with it regularly.

25-125' : Rhyno
100-175' : Roc / PUTTER (Buzzz or Mako would be great here too, but i dont currently own one).
175-250' : TL
250' + : (slightly) Underpowered SL - I'd wish i still owned a Valk.
* Would also consider (Underpowered Katana & Destroyer, Teebird, and/or a variety of forehand options - Gator, Orc, etc).

0-200' - Magic
201-320' - Wizard
321-365' - Buzz
366-410 - Stalker
410+ - Still the Stalker, I feel more in control of it than wider rimmed drivers.

The distances would change depending on how high or low the ceiling is.

I am a total noob so i can't throw RHBH consistently straight.

for my narrow, low ceiling shots i throw a Champ eagle X RHFH. I can throw it 4-5 feet off the ground and it will go dead straight for about 225 then skip for another 15-20.

If i had to RHBH i would hyzer flip my comet X

Ssshhhh. Don't tell them about the Aero. It's a secret disc from the distant past who's straightness should not be known to the general public.

That said, I'll use an Aero, Roc or Eclipse most usually or I might take a chance on my strange Archangel that, despite it's HSS rating appears to be harder to crank over than my FL, yet still has very little fade. However, on a long tunnel par 4 I'd rather do 2 roc or aero shots in the 200-300' range and putt for bird than take a chance of shanking into the woods with the AA.
