This kind of ties into Adaven's thread. I have a DGC in my neighborhood - nothing special - just a little nine holer that sees a lot of use. This place gets trashed and graffiti covered on a regular basis. Nothing ever seems to get done except for some of the responsible players picking up trash. And, the city recently putting up a cute little sign saying the park closes at sundown. (fat lot of good that does) Last Thursday morning was my breaking point. I spent about 1.5 hours cleaning off all of the gang tags and stickers from the brass hole numbers, trash cans, and baskets. Just used some of the wife's acetone nail polish remover and a couple old rags. I think it looks so much better now. When I got home I shot out an email to Foothills Parks to ask if it was ok to make some improvements - kind of like a donation from me to the community. The course needs two 4x4 hole marker posts, (one broken one missing) 4 brass hole numbers and some odds and ends. I also mentioned painting the rest of the 4x4's to cover over the sharpie scribble. The Director of Parks Planning and Construction got right back to me before the end of the day. He sent me some info on the Adopt-A-Park program. Also mentioned he would be happy to meet with me to discuss. Or if I know an organization that would like to take this on, to let him know. Seems like a pretty cool guy, and worth talking to in person. Maybe with a little help Schaefer DGC can turn the corner.

This is terrible that such a new course like Schaefer would get this crap. It seems like that course has become the hangout for riff-raff in the neighborhood. I hope your efforts do not go unnoticed and things start to change.

I have done the same before with the graffiti at a local course I was at. I took a few rags, a big bottle of Goo Gone and went to work on the signs and baskets. I would just play the round but at each hole I would spend some time removing the graffiti. It was great to look at the teesigna dn actually see what it was trying to say. Unfortunately the baskets were tagged again a short time later. How cool is it for a gang member to "tag" a basket. How hard do you think the other gangbangers laughed at him when he just said,"I just tagged a disc golf basket!" Anyway, I think we could all do a little something to keep the courses clean and presentable. After all most of the courses are free to play.

If we all took care of courses like this the world would be a better place, I am just sure of it.

I've done alot of clean-up days, same kind of stuff you wrote about. I'm wondering....adopt-a-park program? If the two of you came to an agreement that you take care of that course, that THEY pay for anything you need. If they will not pick up the cost keep your receipts most parks dept are 501-c-3 you may be able too get a tax break. If you can't get a tax break go see if your local club will pay for the maint. I've had to deal with park depts. Good, caring people in a bad system. He got back with you that day because he's looking at you as free labor.

At the local Houston Disc golf club, they asked for people to step up for their local course and become a "course supervisor". Under that title, you keep an eye on the course, report any problems to the club, and pick up trash, and just help take care of that course. That might be something you could look into

Pretty much since they have such a small budget. The program is for the most part a task agreement. The what, where and how often you're going to do it type of thing.

It just amazes me where people will leave their trash. I found a half full (yellowish liquid) gatorade bottle sitting in one of the baskets. Come on, really, really you couldn't just throw that out?

I played at Valley View Park in Altoona, PA about a month ago. I was really disappointed at the amount of crap laying everywhere. I've seen a lot worse, but was just bummed in general.

There were the occasional Sports Drink, soda, water or beer bottles along with misc. fast food trash, etc. And it seemed like there were at least one or two Blue Tootsie Roll wrappers on every hole. This had to be one, single, inconsiderate bum who couldn't just put his wrappers in his pocket!!!

Anyway, so after I went around once, I went back to my car and grabbed a couple Wal Mart bags. I must have looked like a bum when I was picking up some of the stuff. An old guy on a walking trail looked at me really weird as I pulled some garbage from under a bridge in a small creek. He probably thought that I was collecting aluminum to recycle. And when I was done, I had two full bags of garbage to get rid of. Here's the picture... Old sweaty guy, dirty from the muddy course, wearing a crappy old sleeveless t-shirt, carrying Wal Mart bags around in the woods. Nice sight!

Finally, what amazes me is that with very little time invested, and while playing a round, one person was able to make this course look so much better. It didn't ever really inconvenience me much at all. My round probably only took 5-10 minutes longer to complete than it would have.

Too wet, cold and muddy to throw today, so I put up some new brass at Schaefer. I grabbed the numbers at my local big box store when I went for my new grill cover. Eventually I'm going to get the two 4x4 posts in on #3 and #4. This pet project is being funded by selling off my old Jeep parts on Craigslist. No real out of pocket cost and my shed is getting cleaned out in the process.

Looks good. Are you gonna add distance signs also?

That's a good idea. It would look way better than the distance scribbled on the 4x4's in sharpie. I'll have to look in to it.
