View Full Version : Getting Rid Of The Smell...

Well I'm from the Chicago area and we had a lot of flooding and my course had big deep ponds EVERYWHERE and this course is not supposed to have water... Well basically I threw my Disc in the pond. No big deal I wait and check everyday as the pond decreases in size.

This morning I go out there and see my Disc about halfway sunken in the pond. I grab a stick and fish it out. Well the smell on this Disc is terrible. I have to idea how to remove the smell of Goose poo / murky nasty water. Right now I just have dish soap covered on the Disc laying in the sink.

Wondering if any of you guys know how to remove that nasty smell from a Disc. I'll looking to try anything. I'm glad I got my Disc back but if it is going to smell like ass forever then that just sucks.

Man bro, I think plastic will absorb smell like it does dye. I hope someone can give you a good idea.

Although this brings up a crazy idea. Maybe they can start coming out with disc that smell. Vanilla, blueberry, orange,..., that would be hilarious. Although, I wonder how your car would smell after about 20 different scented discs have been in your vehicle for a day. :D

I had the exact same problem, my disc was in the pond for about a month before I found it. The only thing that I found that fixed it was time. The disc smelled for a month or two but eventually it faded away as I kept throwing it. I know it's not really a solution, but if you keep using it, it will get a little better.

Mine was Champion by the way, I dont know how the plastic affects it.

I'm gonna try it. Go to the craft store and get that really concentrated candle scent. Put the disc in REALLY hot water, to open up the pores and stuff. And then soak it in hot water/scent mix let it cool in the mix and see how long it lasts.:D

I had a disc spend 2 years inside a dead deer as it decomposed, came out fresh n' clean can't imagine why yours in a pond smells that bad.

That stinks man,
Anyway, try putting a 1/2 cup of baking soda in boiling water and let the disc soak in it. Baking soda is great for absorbing smells. The only thing to watch is if the water is too hot, the disc could warp. Hope that helps.

LOL,

Donovan- I actually saw an article on Yahoo 2 weeks ago about the top 10 young entrepreneur's & one of the companies was called Poly Flav & they make plastic that tastes & smells like Strawberry, Orange, Rasberry or Pear.
I forwarded the link to my sales rep at Innova & I asked him to forward it to the powers that be. I think it would make a sweet 2009 USDGC Roc, or a nice fundraiser disc.
The link is www.addtheflavor.com

Disc Golf Greg - I'm in IL too. I played Bartlet on Friday & their are 100's of dead fish all along the fairway on hole 6, 7 & 8, big ones & little one, It smells terrible, I thought I was going to pass out.

There is an amazing product called Odors Away. I have never tried it on a disc but back when we were renting we had sewage back up into our bathtub. The whole bthroom stank even after the problem was fixed and we cleaned the tub out. But this stuff got rid of the odors in a hurry.

Here is a link to the product at Amazon.com - http://www.amazon.com/Odors-Away-Drop-Air-Freshener/dp/B000LNWDEM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1222050527&sr=8-2

The baking soda idea makes sense to me, Im not sure if hot water opens the pours like human skin, but it probably lets the plastic expand and loosen up enough to flush the smell out. I was gonna say fabreeze or something, thats supposed to have "active ingredients" that remove smell.

Its funny reading this thread after the "disc golfers are gay" thread. Ill admit if they start making "jazmine dewdrop" and "vanilla honeysuckle" discs I might have to distance myself a bit from the normal enthusiast...haha..Maybe just stick to the "old school" non-flavored kind of discs.

Baking soda has not done that great a job of removing cigarette smells from some ebay discs I've bought. I tried keeping them in a closed, but not air-tight, container for weeks.

haha....(sterotypical monster truck announcers voice)...no dude, its gotta smell like deer blood or tobacco spit!...who said theres anything wrong with mauve?

Can you imagine the ordering process of a disc?...."Okay I got the 170-172 champion monarch, in blue, with wild cherry scent...I was trying to get the blue raspberry so the scent was appropriate with the color but theyre all sold out in champion blue at that weight."

yes I found the italic feature just today and it works great

When I brought home a disc found at the bottom of a creek it smelled horrible. My wife and I soaked it in bleach and dishwater soap for 24 hours and the smell was all but gone. Give it a try.

They should come out with a soft putter that smells like a taco and call it "The Soft Taco". You'd have to be careful and try not to taco it too many times though.

I have a stingray and a spider that smell like patchouli. I bought both at Inifinety's End in Charlotte, and the place has always smelled like that. The spider has been thrown for over a month and still smells like the parking lot at a Grateful Dead show...

The Charcoal idea sounds like it might work. I way burry your disc under a pile of Kingsford for 24 hours and see what happens.

I'll try the Charcoal method tomorrow. The Disc still smells awful, but hopefully this will work. I did get some new plastic to cheer me up though... picked up an Innova DX XD, and Innova DX Spider.

You may want to put in a ziplock too. That way they will deep absorb the odor. Just a thought.

Try On and Off - its a hull cleaner for boats - pretty hazardous stuff - corrosive to skin/eyes- bad to breath & will probably will destroy your disc. Probably the most aggressive cleaning agent i've ever seen. Guaranteed to remove the stink.

http://images.westmarine.com/large/8466468.jpg

on more a serious note - maybe try some activated carbon - like the stuff you put in Aquarium filters.
or if you're going for the charcoal briquettes method - you probably have lighter fluid hanging around - try spraying that on the disc (Dont light it) - it's strong smelling stuff that could overpower the goose **** smell
or spray Deep Woods OFF! on the disc or just some straight DEET

Alright well I got good news, the Disc doesn't smell anymore! I used Charcoal with some Baking Soda, and I put it all in a Baggie. I left it for a few days and came out to check it this Morning and it was all good.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I highly recommend using this method if this were to happen to you.

Yeah mechanic soap does work wonders. I have a friend who works on industrial buildings... I've helped him out with work a few times and used that soap and it was awesome. I had called him when I got the Disc dirty asking if he could bring me some... but the Charcoal method was great. The Disc still smells good.
