I know there is a thread for this but I have done numerous serches and can not find it, so I wanted to add this as a resource to view unique pins and baskets. (oncourses and homemade)
First http://www.disctrips.com/galleries/index.htm has several gallaries and some neat target and baskets.

Love that first wooden one. I've seen it before and think that it's awesome. I wonder how it catches.
And I feel pretty flattered. The 4th picture, with the light blue Aviar holed out in it, is one of my pics. Unfortunately, those are NOT the best catching home-made baskets in the world at Jumonville Glenn.

Make some time for it. Unique, homemade baskets represent a huge part of our sport, and add alot to some courses (if they are made well:rolleyes:).

Just now finding this thread and I like. I don't have a picture of it but at one point hole #17 at my college home course (Iowa State University) the basket got run over by a large construction vehicle and was gnarled up something fierce. It was a normal basket but became very unique until we got a new one. The thing was almost completely flattened and at a profile it was either unnoticeable or extremely wide and the funniest part of it was that you could still make it but it didn't take chains just a certain angle.

I run a wire inside the center pole to a small lite in the top. The pvc is the part I like the most. Its more like a tree, On-2707line shots high or low usually stay close to the basket.

That looks like a lot of fun, I really enjoy courses with different kinds of terrain than you usually see. I've played with my portable on the beach, and it is kind of different to have every shot just stick exactly where it hits with no skipping or rolling in the sand.

I love those bicycle rims for the tops...or are they wheelchair rims?
You nailed it with your 2nd choice... wheelchair rims. They work great.
As far as my pictures, this would explain other comments that I've gotten in different threads like the "post your most recent plastic purchase" thread. I got a comment like "I love your 1x1 pixel pictures" and didn't understand it. Now I get that it was just a joke because my pics weren't working.
Anyway, I uploaded the images to an album in my profile just for pictures to put into threads. Well, duh... I had it marked as a private album. So I could see the pictures but no-one else could. All I had to do was make it a public album. As un-savvy as I am with computers, though, I'm actually surprised that I figured out on my own what was wrong and didn't have to have an admin tell me.

Well good for you then. Nice job figuring it out. I work with computers for a living and I have no idea on the public/private album so you get the genius award for the day ;)
I've got an old laptop that I like and it's not happy with newer browsers so I'm happy if I don't have to upgrade to use this site.

Here are a few pictures of the new 4th generation of mountain wood baskets. The new 2010 Pine Basket is comprised of a base from a dead 220 year old Pondersosa Pine, the post is a Lodgepole Pine and the basket and top ring are Canadian White Pine, all the branches are from both Ponderosa and Lodgepole Pine. This basket also features the all-important beer bottle opener on the center post for when you are thirsty and have no way to open your favorite beverage on the course.

how do you secure the to the ground?
PineBasketBuilder
02-08-2010, 12:36 PM
To try an answer previous posts.
The newest Pine baskets take 3 days to make, the aspen baskets take well over a week to make. But all are completely green materials, standing dead trees and leftover milled wood from cabinet work. Now if I could get recycled tire chain maybe Obama can stimulate my "Green" business!
The base on the pine basket is extremely heavy and should be stable on flat ground. It is on a private course in Bailey, Colorado if the owner wants he can drill a couple holes through the base and pin with rebar. The aspen baskets have holes in the base ring for pinning with rebar to the ground.
As for a short course with all wood baskets, I'm slowly working on that at my place. Here are a few more pics of buckets at my house. Five of my best baskets are at other courses, but I can say that the baskets at my house sit out in the snow all winter, get rained on all spring, and bake in the summer sun and some are on their 4th year of play and still in great shape.

I just have to add to the chorus of folks saying these things look wonderful. I love that you're only using dead wood especially due to the types of wood you are using. I would love to see these on any course. I didn't really get that comment about a short wooded course.
Most times people elect not to play a course which doesn't have the typical ~$400 baskets. In this case I'm sure people go out of their way to play these unique targets. I wish there was some way I had land near-enough to you that I could justify commissioning some.

Those wood baskets are a really nice compliment to the beautiful surroundings in those pictures. While the pine baskets have a clean, even and symmetrical look, I would have to say I like the aspen baskets even more simply for their natural appearance in that environment. Not only that but each aspen basket is truly one of a kind.
If a large sum of money should ever make it's way to me, I'm buying enough land for an 18 hole course and I'm commissioning you to create all the baskets for it.

I know some people don't like target baskets, but I need portablity, affordabilty and it has to be easy to make.
Here are my 2 collapsible baskets I use for my students.
Basket 1: bucket $.99, adjustable camera tripod $9.00, hardware $0 given to me by JRawk.
Basket 2: bucket $0, telescope tripod $4.75, Hardware $.28.

I didn't do the best job of it but I was trying to make that a complement rather than a critique on the correctness of the post.
It's certainly a unique basket and that's what this is all about right?
Next time I am there I will get some close-ups but the course below has high school shop class baskets. If the gauge of the metal and chains was the slightest bit thicker you wouldn't be able to tell they're not Chainstars.

Thanks for the link and comments guys. 12 looks like a swett hanging basket as well. I assume that's an xmas tree patch in the 12 and 1 pics. Maple Hill in Mass has a few xmas tree patch holes. I think it's DG is a great addition to those farms.

It's a terrific course, one of the two the best I've played so far. Mando has done a great job all the way around. And yes it's a Christmas tree farm.
That same weekend I played another private course that has similar potential, but it was no where near as nice, and was quite the contrast with Sugaree. We also played Ashe County (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1905) the day before, which is the top rated course in NC on here, and I enjoyed Sugaree much more. Don't get me wrong, Ashe County is a great course. I'm still amazed at how few of the holes played uphill, with lots of downhill holes, and zero crazy hikes between holes. He has done an awesome job with the layout of the course. Hopefully someday he'll be able to fully open it back up for somewhat regular play.

Hey Jimb, is the top made of metal as well? The gauge of chain looks to be heavier too. How does it catch? Looks pretty sweet!

The top and bottom are made out of some sort of sheet metal. The top and bottom are welded onto the sides. The chain is the 2/0 zinc coated stuff from Lowes. The chains, 12 outer and 6 inner, do a good job of slowing down my putts. However, the smooth basket rim, bottom and sides let low puts really slip and slide around a lot. This lets some putts skip out that might get caught by a basket made out of metal bars instead. I'm still thinking about how to upgrade this part of the basket and would appreciate any suggestions.
And the black rim on top of the basket it made out of the plastic stuff that you can put on the edge of car doors to keep them from getting banged up. Otherwise, the exposed metal edge tears up DX plastic something fierce.

It's not too bad. When I was moving testing pin locations I could pick the whole thing up and carry it pretty easily.
It was intended to be really portable. The top/chain holding assembly will nest in the bottom basket. Problem is, all of the sections were threaded together and the threads were too fine and made out of soft metal so they were easily messed up. Once I got it right, I wouldn't take it apart again.

Not an actual basket, or target. More like a monument. When #15 at Z-Boaz is set long, this can be an obstacle. The "Z" is not separate from the tree trunk, it is carved from the trunk.

The new 2010 Pine Basket is comprised of a base from a dead 220 year old Pondersosa Pine, the post is a Lodgepole Pine and the basket and top ring are Canadian White Pine, all the branches are from both Ponderosa and Lodgepole Pine. 1st Gen were welded on ..... small bolts were much easier to use, faster to install, and stronger (considering you can't get a good weld on the crap grills are made out of, a few broke off with solid putts)
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p245/porkchop44/CIMG0175.jpg
1st Gen was the center pole weld only ..... very flimsy ...... added supports for a stronger top.

I will Post a pic of the Original if I can find one ...... its currently at my parents house ..... It's been rusting outside since 2006. Haven't even been to the back of the property where it is in 2 yrs so I have no clue what shape it's in.
Don't put too much stock in the welds. Its almost impossible to weld to the crap metal grills are made out of, regardless of your skill. I consider myself a hobby/novice welder but can lay a nice strong, clean, and pretty bead when needed; but all you can do on this stuff is just glob it on nice and thick and grind it to a smooth finish.

That is awesome. Can you imagine showing up at a tailgate party with that thing?
Grill basket
Quite possibly the most amazing thing I've seen on this site to date.
Can you still use it as a grill if need be?

That was the idea for the 2nd Gen, but I opted to go for a beefier version of the 1st Gen. Having a working grill basket has been the Idea for the 3rd Gen for 4 years. I now have a suit and tie job in Des Moines and no longer have the time, shop, or my brothers welding equipment at my disposal. All you'd have to do is make a notch in the grate to go around the pole and leave in the tabs that hold the grate. The man issues are tabs chewing up discs, the soot getting on the putters, putting on the hot grill, and the chance of the hot coals / embers weakening the welds.
You should note that the opening (basket rim to chain holder) is the same as a Mach 3. The width of the top is very close to a Mach 3. The basket is a lot narrower as you can tell. The chains are the same length as a Lightning DB-5. This version has 18 chains (I think, I'd have to go to the garage to check), the original had 20 or 24 but were of lighter chains. The heavier and fewer chain version catches much better.

The Weber is most stout when brand new. What do you figure you get out of her? 3 years? 5?

That's an interesting tidbit of information. Thanks for sharing.
Major kudos on your ingenious design. If the 3rd generation basket ever comes to light, please show us the final product.
So dude, you've been a member of this site since 2008... where ya been? What other cool stuff do you have hidden up your sleeve?

I hang out with the other Iowa Slackers at IowaDG.com. I mainly use this site to track the courses I've played and troll a few threads from time to time, but post minimally.
When I first joined I wrote a review or 2, but to write a review that I feel is solid is very time consuming (I’m very anal retentive). So only really review courses that I visit on road trips or courses that are off the beaten path that have no or few reviews.
I enjoy this site immensely .... lots of creative and intriguing folks on here.

It shows in your work. I mean that as a compliment.
Well, I hope we get to see more of your contributions in the future.
If I may make a suggestion... considering the weak material that you have to work with on those grills, how about welding a metal "ring" around the inside of the lid? This ring would better be described as a band. This band would then have the eyelets from which you could hang the chains. For optimal strength, you could run a bead along the entire perimeter of the band. This would then spread the stress from the weight of the chains, as well as the sudden impact from discs hitting the chains, to the entire bead rather than a few weld points. This would also maintain the exterior integrity of the grill so that it looks like it's just a grill.

That is a great idea in theory, but when it comes down to it weight is the biggest enemy. One thing you have to consider is that all the weight of the top is on the center pole (thus the need for the internal supports, in version 2), adding a ring and that much material / welds could potentially make it worse. Plus the time to weld and grind all that would be lofty. The solution to drill and bolt the chains on has worked wonders as far as a time, ease, and strength standpoint go. One thing I could have done is used some bondo to keep the external grill integrity more intact. I had to use Bondo on this version to fill a couple of rust holes; I guess while at it I could have covered the bolt heads with bondo and sanded to a smooth even finish to conceal them. Food for thought for next time.
The only major improvement, other than being able to use it as a grill, is to add supports on the bottom much like I did for the top. On the original, the top was very flimsy, the supports really eliminated that. It however has shifted all the energy to the bottom of the pole where is connects to the bottom of the grill. It’s attached via two thin plates welded to the pole, sandwiching the bottom of the grill. They are then welded to the gill and ground down to a smooth finish (very well hidden). These plates are stronger than just welding the pole to the grill (ala Version 1) but they still offer too much play. Version 3, if there is one, will have supports on the lower as well. The question is where to put them. For external esthetics one would say the inside like the upper. That however does 2 things, gives you more things to scuff a disc on in the "basket", more things in the way to keep it from being a grill, and it also keeps the energy on the junk material of the grill. The other option is to attach them to the pole and the legs on the external side of the gill; adds strength, and frees up the "Basket" for grilling and catching, but it further harms the external integrity of the grill ....... what to do??
Sorry for the long (Anal) reply ....... can you tell I've had 4 years to think about how to improve it :D

Yeah, you've definitely put some thought into this basket. I see what you're saying and you bring to light things that are not obvious to me since I'm not a welder and not really all that familiar with those types of grills.
As far as exterior aesthetics go though, don't get me wrong, I'm totally diggin' the look of version 2. Having the bolt heads shown so prominently on the top gives it a tough Monster Garage look.

I played the course at Kamp Modoc DGC in Modoc, IN over this past weekend. They had one basket hanging from a tree, and another basket behind a 15' wide X 10' Tall wood wall with a 2'X3' hole cut into it that you had to throw through to get it into the basket. It was pretty cheesy, but it made it a little more interesting I guess.

I saw one of these at the IDGC the other day, and it was awesome. It had the heartiest chain arrangement of any target I've ever seen. It looked like cut thrus and spit outs just wouldn't happen. The guy at the pro shop said it's probably the only one in the US. I'd love to have one in my back yard.

Latitude 64 basket. It has some fit and finish issues the way they do the inner rings but it does catch well.

Feel free to contact Latitude about pricing but it's about $40 to ship a basket within the US so coming from Sweden's going to be insane. I like the idea of a Discatcher with a thinner top band.

The guy at the IDGC (I wish I could remember his name, Jason, maybe) said that they would probably be $600 or $700 with the exchange rate, import duties, customs, etc. He seemed to indicate that they weren't available here in the US. It did look awesome, though. If I was a rich man I would have made an offer he couldn't refuse for it.

Just off the assembly line the 2011 Pine Basket. Same great lodgepole and pondersosa pine tenon jointed construction. New chain design for better catching. She will soon be delivered to her permanent home at The Hi-View Disc Golf Course in Sphinx Park/Pine Colorado.

Beautiful! The chains were the only drawback to its forebears. Keep making these gems.
Where exactly is the Hi-View course? Never heard of it.

What was the drawback on the chains? Always looking for input on how to improve the design/catching ability of my baskets! As for Hi-View it's another one of these private courses we have here in the area. It's run by a very friendly local who has been part of the disc golf scene here in Colorado for a long time. If your in the area contact me and I'm sure we can get you a round there or talk to Paulie at Phantom Falls. The courses are real close, a farther drive around the mountain than walk over the top. That would make a great day of disc.

Ah, one of the many secret courses in your guys' area. Rudy filled me in on that when I talked to him around States last summer. Very intriguing.
The one pine basket I threw at, the chains seemed light and didn't have that same ring you're used to from the mass produced baskets. Other than that, though, they are amazing. Wish I had the money or the land to get one.

newest pine basket picture along with a picture of the aspen basket that has stood at Phantom Falls on hole #1 for the last 3 years.
To commemorate 10 years of Phantom Falls disc golf course in Pine, Colorado the new Pine Basket will replace the aspen basket on hole #1. With the aspen basket finding a home in mountain disc golf on this course or one of the other great courses in our region.

Thank you, prerube! Am considering trying to get Jeff Davis CC in Gulfport MS to use a 15-20 acre unused chunk of property for a DG course, and to keep costs down am hoping to show basket design to the tech classes to get them involved.
