It seems that most of the top courses lists are dominated by long distance courses, but I'm more interested in the best courses under 5500 feet.
Preferably mostly wooded.

Burgess park (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1051) on Cape code is up your alley.
On the other side of the country there's NAD (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=107) Bremerton WA

River Grove Park in Kingwood, Tx (just north of Houston). Only two holes over 300ft, but very wooded. If you plan on playing this course, drop me a line, and I will be happy to play a round with you and show you the course.

Any particular state or is this just a general question for the whole US?

I love Wellspring (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1089)in Burlington NC.
NAD is my idea of the quintessential NW woods course. I'd play it again any time.

Tourist,
Do you really consider Colorado mountain college (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1137&mode=ci) a woods course? The pictures don't really look like it, but it may just be those shots.

It's general but I'm in northwestern NC, so I'm most interested in the closest ones as well as other places where they are concentrated...
Wellspring & Valley Springs are on my must play list. Any others over that way ?

I'm pretty sure I know of every public and private course in NC, and I've played most of them. If you tell me...
1) Where you live
2) How many courses you've played and how long you've been playing
3) What your favorite course is
4) How far you throw on a flat open field
...then I'll make some suitable recommendations.
There are lots of good ones out in NW NC.

OK, just tell me what town, city, or county you live in and I'll tell you the good courses.

Have you played the High Country DGC in Jefferson or Ramcat Ridge (private) near Yadkinville?

It's about as wooded as it gets out here, plus its kida short. ummm if pressed, I'd say, not really when you consider how dense the woods are in other places.

High Country-yes, but not what I consider a woods course since half the holes are open.
Ramcat-no, but I think I'll like it.
Richmond Hill,Wellspring,Valley Springs & Reedy Creek are ones that sound about right.

Not sure about NW NC, but I played at Hillcrest near Southern Pines today...and wow, I've never played in wind like that. I had throws that left my hand beautifully and went 150' the wrong way and I had 2 horrible throws that landed 30' from the basket. Putting was also an adventure. Was a fun experience though.

Yeah, I thought High Country wouldn't really fit, but I just threw it out b/c I had hoped to drive over from Raleigh and play it this weekend but the plans fell through. I'll try to keep to the topic...

Now it's hard b/c I don't know which courses you've played...
but Elk Mountain in Plumtree is the closest course to you. It's got lots of trees and tons of elevation changes. 4900/ 5520 ft.
I'd rate it 3 discs.

Played EM back in the winter of 07 and it pretty much ran through a campground...we packed it in after 8 holes. Maybe it has been changed since then.
Also played;
North Tower
Borden park
Horizon Park
Bull Run
Seneca
Cedar Rock
Hilton
Yadkinville
Earlewood
Sugaw
Long Ridge
Roan Mtn.

Reedy Creek Park DGC is a little gem of a course stuck in the Disc Golf mecca that is the Charlotte NC area.

The Coyote DGC at Lester Lorch Park in Cedar Hill, TX (just outside Dallas) is a great mid-length wooded course. There are a few more open holes to keep it interesting, but mostly deuce-able, technicaly, wooded holes under 350'. Very secluded and well maintained too. not to mention there's another great course on in the same park (though it's a little more open).

I've just posted a list of my take on the NC mid-length woods courses (under 5500 ft.). You can find it
on my google sites page NC Woods Courses (http://sites.google.com/site/discgolfcoursereviews/nc-woods-courses-of-medium-length) (please let me know if you can see it. I know the columns are not aligned. Someday I'll learn how to post a table there.)
My Yahoo group, DG Course Reviews (http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/DGCourseReviews/). Look in the Files section.
After pondering this for some days, I think that with your throwing length you'd especially like Wellspring in Burlington. You should also like North Asheboro Park in Asheboro (although a few holes may be a little more open than you requested). It's perfectly suited to your length.
What did you think of Hilton in Hickory? I rated it 8 out of 10.

I think it's interesting that the best of these type of courses are concentrated around the triangle rather than in Charlotte.
It would be fun to hit all of the 8+ between High Point and Raleigh over a long weekend.
Hickory is a terrific course. I really like it.
Just wait till you see the High Country course at Ashe Park, it has it all !
LMK when you play it, and I'll try to meet you.

This topic brings up the thought that it'd be great if the site had top rated courses by certain criteria- 9 holes, short & mid-length, region (larger area than state), etc. Keep it pretty basic because before long, somebody will want to know the best 18 hole course on the side of a mountain, near a McDonald's with no oak trees, etc, etc, etc. The thought of that is probably driving Timg crazy.

I totally agree. For people who like both challenging 18s and interesting little 9s, the criteria by which they judge them (and enjoy them) are totally different from one another. I personally LOVE playing those little "neighborhood nines," as I call them, in small towns and suburban parks. They have their own rhythms and standards, so even though I'm sure people will continue to rate them low in general (usu. 1 or 2 discs), a search filter to view top-rated 9s and 12s would be a great addition to the site.

What's great about "neighborhood nines" is that you can play a quick round during your lunch break or after work or after dinner before it gets dark and not have to commit 1.5+ hours. We need a seperate thread about nine hole courses getting undeservedly dogged out on this site.

pretty much all of northeast MS with exception of a few courses would fit what you are looking for - or anybody that is passing through and is looking for the same thing
