I enjoyed Big Eau Pleine in Mosinee (near wausau) but it was only 9 and now they have 18.
Yulga in Stevens Point, Standing Rocks
Just to the est of Tomah by 20 miles would be he Justin Trails courses
I recmmend doing a map search and look at courses ranked 3.5 or better and you will get 10-20 hits probably.

sandy point w/e (no offense, I haven't played it yet) Winter Park in Kewaunee is a must play! (I played after rain/very bad back... not the best 1st experience, but an amazing course nonetheless... bring GOOD hiking boots... and leave a donation (for the concrete/upgraded tees we all want)
... Silver Creek in Manitowac (sp) was very nice also
edit... highbridge is a dream destination, but winter is soo much closer.....
... I NEED to updated my review with less emotional language... of the very few courses I've played across 3 states, winter and valpo(rogers-lakewood) are slugging it out for my fav. course...
Plamann in appleton is good(27holes) and Kaukauna's grignon park is awesome

Sounds like you want to drive through madison, but its a bit of a pain going all the way west to madison from chicago, but heistand is nice on a weekday. The faster way to lac du flambeau involves taking 45 north out of milwaukee, through oshkosh and taking hwy 10 west, which takes you right to stevens point without ever dealing with madison traffic. this will allow you to spend more time in stevens point, Standing rocks is an absolute must play course. Yulga is one of my faves also, best on a weekday but damn dirty on weekends. I have heard great things about big eau pleine, really want to hit it but i seem to run out of time every time i'm on my way back from Mercer and i'm usually forced to just play yulga because its so close to the freeway. Just dont forget where you're heading, because sandy point makes these other places look like mooky stink. One other bit of advice, if you don't like pine sap in your discs, bring some goo gone or some baking soda to get it off because its nothin but pine, spruce and fir up there.

How long do you have? Here would be my ultimate trip if travelling to northern WI from Chicago.
This is if you LOVE wooded courses with elevation.
Take I43 north out of Milwaukee to Green Bay and head out of the way to Kewaunee to play Winter Park (awesome and amazing variety 27 holes in very unique river valley elevation, lots of woods).
Take Hwy 54 west from GB and hit Standing Rocks in Plover (lots of woods, good elevation, excellent design).
Head north on 51 (may want to stop in Mosinee to play the new 18 hole Big Eau Pleine park, but I haven't played it) then west on 70 to Sandy Point in Lac du Flambeau (awesome private wooded course)
Head west on 70 then north on 13 to Highbridge for a two day must play stay of all their courses.
South on 13 then west on 29 over to Eau Claire to play Tower Ridge I&II (wooded courses that play along x-county ski trails, can really punish you)
Then south on 94 and 27 to Sparta to play Justin Trails courses (the new big brother course will kick your butt i Hear).
This entire trip is well over 12 hours of driving, just from state line back to state line. Go ahead and map this out, it is like a huge loop around WI. The Kewaunee part, and the Eau Claire/Sparta portion in the west of the state are the out-of-the-way portions. But these courses are WI gems if you have the time (i.e. laid off like so many people out there). Do it soon, fall colors are getting past peak in most spots with all the rain we had.

IMOH Big Eau Pleine in Mosinee is better than Standing Rocks; which is better than Yulga....just played Yulga and S. Rocks with out of towners last weekend....they are good courses and were enjoyed; but top vote goes to Mosinee.
