I've yet to break down and shell out money for a disc golf bag. I use a bookbag that I've owned for over 10 years. I would like to play a tourney sometime soon. I know I will need to pick up some mini discs (I think I read I can use a can of tobacca), but will I need an 'official' disc golf bag?

You don't even need a bag to play in tournament. The last tournamet I played it, a guy in my group showed up with 4 discs in his hand and a bottle of water. He would set the discs down and the water and make his throws. Believe it or not , he got the best score out of anyone at the tournament.

You might want to ask the TD (tournament director) if you will get a mini in the players' pack. I've got a trunkload of mini's and probably get a new one at 50% of the events I play. I believe the maximum diameter for a mini would allow for a disc to be used but I could be wrong on that. (I intended to look that up for you but the PDGA site has been down for a while now.)
The other thing is that you always have the option to either use a mini OR leave your disc on the ground and play behind it. Bring an old CD or Pringles lid. Those would qualify. It only needs to be round, fairly thin, and be within a certain diameter range.

rule 802.02: "A. Mini marker discs shall be used to mark a players lie as required by these rules. Mini marker discs must have a diameter of between 7 and 15 centimeters and a height not exceeding 3 centimeters."

Meaning, diameter is between 2.8 and 5.9 inches and height not exceeding 1.2 inches.
For those people who prefer to measure in American Standard. Don't we measure distances by feet instead of by yards in disc golf rather than ball golf? Weird, uh?

Yep, except when we're talking about putting greens...then we use meters. Even weirder

This means that if it's your first tournament, don't bother buying a mini. If you get one free at signup, great. If you, you can grab almost anything and make it work. Any CD in your car makes a great mini, and you can showcase your excitement about the New Kids reunion tour... :D

There's no reason to shell out $25-50 to buy something no better than what you already have. I use an old Eddie Bauer backpack that I've had for about 12 years, and it holds 12 discs just fine, with room for pencils, water, etc. It wins no style points at all, and maybe it makes me look like a novice, but I'm not trying to impress anyone.

Don't even worry about a dg bag.
You do need a mini though...if your shot ends up suspended in a tree or resting on top of the basket you'll need to mark your lie.
It'll make other players crazy if their losing to a guy playing with a just a few discs in a plastic shopping bag & wearing sandles!
Do think about having a look at the rulebook first.
Good luck!

You shouldn't need an "official" disc golf bag, but they do work better than a backpack.

You can also use the previous throws lie (untouched of course) and you will not need a marker. You only need a marker in any instance where the lie is to be relocated, as in if you were going to throw the same disc again, if you are relocating for relief, or if the lie never made it to the ground. SOOO, most rounds you can actually do without a mini.

If you're playing casually with friends, you never need a mini. I only pull out the mini for tourneys. if you don't have one you can probably use someone else's. I carry 2 or 3, so do a lot of people.

Army-Navy surplus stores have ammo or gas mask bags for $5-$10. They are very durable.

Disc golf bag is all your preference. If the bookbag your using now works for you then stick with it, no need to buy one. I would suggest bringing something to mark your disc with, whether its a old CD or a mini is up to you.

Also make sure you write your name and phone # on the back of your discs in case you lose them.

Not only in case of loss... PDGA rules require that you play with a uniquely marked disc.
E.g. What happens if you and someone else on your card both throw red Star TeeRexes with black stamps and they land close to each other? How do you know whose is whose? (Happened to me in a big tourney BTW... didn't know the other guy threw the same disc and I picked up his and played from his lie before we discovered the mistake, cost me two penalty strokes. That lesson taught me to sign my name on top of my discs too...)

you could have marked it with a mini and looked at the bottom to see if it was yours or not - by marking it, you are not disturbing the lie and if the disc is not yours, then he can still play his shot where it landed

good lesson learned, I didn't know it was a pdga rule. Thanks for letting me know!

I did mini-mark it... then I picked it up and put it right into my bag without looking at the bottom. I was young(er) and not nearly as tournament experienced as I am now.
But I learned that my signature on top of the disc makes it really obvious which disc is mine when I'm walking up to it.

I've seen book bags, duffel bags, diaper bags, even double lined plastic grocery bags used at tournaments. Whatever works for ya'.

So if someone doesn't have a mini, and they flip their thrown disc over and then plays from that back of that, in a tournament, that is changing the lie. Do not do this. I have seen a lot of people do this and perhaps I should have called them on it.
As far as playing and using your mini on other occasions, I have this philosophy, play every round like it is the World Championships. It just gets me in the habit so that when I get to a tournament I do not do anything stupid.

In the army they called that training for war like you'd fight the war, it helps you get in the habit of doing it the right way so you won't have to think about it when the time comes. It's a great strategy.

That is excellent advice. I do the same thing. If you play trny golf, then play every round like a trny round. I always look back to the tee pad from basket when practicing, and during play on an unfamiliar course at a trny. Now I even do it while playing my 2 home courses(even though I know all my lines and lanes at each) just to make sure I'm in the habit of doing it. The more prepared for trny play you are, the more your in a position to place well.
