View Full Version : How many extinct courses can we come up with?

How many courses are gone and forgotten? Closed down and boarded up? For lack of funds or maintenance?

Let's number them and come up with a total.

I'll start with the first permanent disc golf course in the Pacific Northwest, Fircrest Park, near Tacoma, Washington. It was built in 1977 or 1978. I was working for the rec department there at the time. It had pole holes and the poles are actually still there. I can't bring myself to list it on this site. I don't think anyone has actually played there in years and years. I wouldn't want anyone wasting there time making a trip there. It was built to play with Whamo toy frisbees, 119, 141 and 165 grams.

# 2. Bob's Disc Golf. The first course in Washington state with baskets. It was a pay for play course located in a wind-swept field near McChord Air Force Base. I believe it went out of business after one summer. Those baskets were then donated to the county rec department and eventually became the orginal 18 baskets at Ft. Steilacoom Disc Golf Course.

# 3. North Idaho College course is now listed this site as defunct. I just played there in June.

I know there was a course in Newberg, Oregon that was listed but was gone when I tried to play it in May of 08. Someone from Oregon help me on the name of this old course.

Start adding to the list gentlemen.

i've got two that i can add to the list here in northern michigan.

--Mt. Mcsauba in Charlevoix, MI had a course with baskets and it has been closed down. i never had a chance to play it and i don't know how long it was there. i beleive it is still listed on the PDGA course listing, but i know it is gone.

--just north of Harbor Springs, MI there was a Barnyard golf course (ball golf mainly). they had a disc golf gathering each year. that course is now covered with a condominium project.

that's all i have to add.

# 6-there was a course in Hannibal, Mo. back in the day. It went defunct and a buddy of mine bought the baskets. I think half of the baskets went into Jefferson Barracks and the other half were the original 9 hole course in Endicott Park. Anyway, I have no recollection of the name of that park.

# 7-Big Driver/Little Putter in Washington, Mo. It was a pay for play course set up next to a driving range. It lasted for maybe a year.

# 8-First Baptist Church in St. Charles, Mo. No need to comment other than it is gone.

# 9-Oceans of Fun in Kansas City, Mo. It was a 9 hole pitch and putt where they rented fastbacks to park visitor to play with. At some point they built a ride over that land and the baskets vanished.

Garland Scout Ranch in Stonewall, LA - Only got to play it once...about 2 weeks before the baskets were pulled. AWESOME Houck design...tight and technical with some very unique holes. The story I got was that none of the Boy Scouts ever played it and not enough locals from Shreveport played there enough for the Scouts to justify keeping it. Very sad...everyone I know who played it loved it, just not enough local involvement.

John Houck even wrote a "dear diary" style article about his experience designing this course from scratch...it's a good read if you have time: Part 1 (http://houckdesign.com/diary1.html) & Part 2 (http://houckdesign.com/diary2.html)

Just out of Moscow, Idaho, there used to be a great little 9 hole course that had a mix of technical wooded holes and a few nice open holes in a meadow with a teepee in the middle. It had a nice winding stream through it as well. It was the perfect little get away with some cool elevation shots. Atleast it was there while I was in college at Wahington State University. = )

I'm very interested in this topic as I'm working with course directory data to map the locations of all courses, existing and extinct.

I have a few to add:

Rockledge DGC, Rockledge, FL - there were actually two versions of this course. The first was installed in 1977 or 78, then moved in about 1986 after the owners sold the land to Wal-Mart. They then sold the second piece of land also

Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL - 9-hole course on the college campus near the football stadium. It was the victim of a huge stadium and parking lot expansion about 10 years ago.

Athens, GA - This was a pay-to-play that I played back in 1981 or 82. The baskets ended up at Northside Park in Gainesville, FL.

Chastain Park, Atlanta, GA - Great little 9-holer in a city park near north of downtown. Holes played across a cool little gulch. Victim of extreme vandalism that made maintenance costs too great. Pulled in the late '80's or early '90s.

Titusville, FL - Had a Fly-18 course at a ball golf course (Fly-18's first?) that was pulled after a few years. I never played there but T-ville is where I grew up, so that reason to go back is kaput.

Mobile, AL (or near-abouts) - Had a course at a KOA campground in the late 1970's. It got pulled shortly after opening because some of the female competitors at a tournament decided to play the last round topless. Tom Monroe knows the whole story.

South Gate Park, South Gate, CA - Near L.A. and Long Beach. I played it about 18 years ago. Heard it got pulled because of gangsta activity.

Jurupa Hills Park, Jurupa Hills, CA - Not too far from Innova headquarters in Rancho Cucamonga. 9-holer built on the side of rocky hill. I played it in 1990, not sure when it was pulled.

Bonneli Regional Park, San Dimas, CA - Just north of L.A. in the San Gabriel Valley (not far from Wham-O's old headquarters). Never played it. They needed the space to build a water park.

Bucklin Park, El Centro, CA - Never played there. It was in the ground in the early-to-mid 1980's. Would have been very hot and dusty.

Las Palmas Park, National City, CA - Same as above...

I'm sure I can come up with more...

First course I ever played was a cool mountain course in Frazier Colorado called Grandma's. It is extinct and I miss it dearly. Thank god for Beaver Ranch tough!

Supposedly was a course near Ann Arbor, MI called "Kandahar" right before my time.

Traverse City MI- "Timberlee" - got pulled approx. 1999-2000. Was 24 hole ski resort course.

"Stonehenge" near Nashville, TN- private and used for 2001 Am. Worlds.

Also, keeping a tab on all temp. courses set up for tournaments?

I guess the God-King of all extinct disc golf courses would be the Boylan Family Tree Farm course in Laurel Springs, NC. When I googled it to make sure I spelled it right, I noticed that Ken Climo still has it listed as one of his favorite courses.

#31 Govan,SC . It was a private course set up on pasture land. Had some small ponds, elevation changes, and large live oak trees. The last tourney there they had roped off areas marked as if you were playing the USDGC at Winthrop. Hole #18 was 1/4 mile long, with roped off area down the fairway so you had to be long and accurate. Sadly this course ended because it went on two seperate family farms, and they had gotten into some disputes, so the course went by the wayside.

It's a shame we can't have these on DGCR so we can still count extinct courses in our total courses played.

Somebody from Oregon help me out here. A few years back there was a course listed in Troutdale called "Hagars Full Sail Disc Golf." It sat behind a tavern, had three baskets which you shot at from three different teepads and bordered on the Sandy River. Does anyone recall it? I played it a few years back Is it still open?

And there once was a course in Albany on the west side of the freeway located in kind of an industrial area. The little lake now looks like a toxic waste dump. Anyone remember playing this course when it was open?

Let us know about these two and we'll officially add them to the list.

There were two Fly 18 courses in Chicago, one at Edgebrook Golf Course and another at River Oaks Golf Course in Calumet City. Both were pulled last fall. My understanding is that the Edgebrook course might come back after the no compete clause expires, but at this point both are gone.

The course at U.C. Santa Cruz is still listed on the PDGA site and here at DGCR, but it's "extinct" for most purposes. I don't know if it was ever really a serious course; it never had teepads or baskets, or even tone poles as far as I know.

Also, there used to be an object course on Mt. Tabor here in Portland, OR. Some people still play it, I hear, but there's way too many pedestrians and park users up there.

# 33 Edgebrook Golf Course in Chicago

# 34 River Oaks Golf Course, Calumet City, Chicago

# 35 Simpson Park in Albany, Oregon

I think we need more info on the Maui course and on the Santa Cruz course. Was Tabor ever considered a real course? Was it listed on the PDGA's list?

My brothers and I have play two courses that I can't find on here.
#36 one at the Dallas Baptist Univ. in Dallas, TX. We played this one in Aug. 2001.

#37 one at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS. There was a 9 hole in the middle of campus.

#37* this one was an 18 hole course that replaced the 9 hole at Southwestern College east of the main campus near the soccer fields. They moved the course out there for about a year and now both courses are gone.

This was the first course I ever played, back when I was a student there in the late 90's. When I was there, it was an 18-hole course with real baskets, but it kept getting uprooted and moved around to make room for all the building projects. Last time I visited, they'd built so many new buildings I hardly recognized the place. And that was several years ago.

The only one I know of is Gulley Park in Fayetteville, AR. It was in a park in the middle of town and had quite a few poorly designed holes that led many drivers into pedestrians because of blind corners and such. They picked it up and moved it to Lake Fayetteville Park because of all the injuries & such, which is a shame because the course there was IMHO better than the one they put in.

#42 Camelot Park in Bryan, TX. Was a John Houck designed course.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q193/ejubin/th_camelot.gif (http://s136.photobucket.com/albums/q193/ejubin/?action=view&current=camelot.gif)

Quote from a local: "I went there one day and was quite confused when I could not find any baskets. Apparently, the homeowners in that area petitioned to have the course removed after some dirtbag disc golfers started yelling and cursing at a birthday party group that had set up a picnic in one of the fairways. Couple of bad seeds ruined it for all of us."

I don't know the answer to that yet. I've requested some archived database info that should include the deleted courses. Right now the database I have doesn't include them (they've been *deleted*). Once I have more info I'll do some analysis, such as basket vs. object, etc.

I'm starting to map the dead courses, and welcome input from others: Dead Disc Golf Courses (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=105226210124576609340.00045a6d47c7c1a331fca&ll=34.044526,-117.436037&spn=0.005894,0.009613&t=h&z=17)

Rizbee,

What is your eventual objective for this project? Are you hoping that someone will resurrect these defunct courses?

My original objective was to collect the data so I could more accurately map the growth of courses across the US. I'm working on an animated map where markers appear as time passes. It made sense to me that courses that were installed then removed should have markers that appear then dissappear.

As I've gotten into the data collection I'm finding that these extinct courses have some interesting stories that go along with them, so I think it's a valuable part of the history of disc golf (which, by the way, is very poorly documented).

I'm not actively looking to get any of these courses resurrected, as there usually is a good reason they are extinct. If anyone is interested in collaborating on this project I can give you access to the Google Map so you can add data points.

Long Run Park in Louisville, KY had a course back in the late 70's. They were using poles cemented into tree stumps or something strange like that. Ed Hendrick found out about it and threatened to sue unless they bought proper baskets from him. So they closed the course at Long Run and opened the course at Iroquois Park in 1981 thanks to Dave Greenwell who bought the baskets himself.

Wabash Park
Wabash Rd, Rochester, MI 48307

A short nine hole course i stumbled upon on lunchbreak from a job i had near there. There was a couple dozen apple trees and a few evergreens but mostly mowed grass. Over the course of two years, i hit metal on at least four of the holes before i aced the 134 ft Hole #4. Two or three years later, the city removed the baskets and i never found out exactly why. The park still exists and still has a small fenced-in playground on one end. Google Maps shows it looking mowed but unused for anything else.

Although a 24 hole course is currently there, Back in 1991 there was only 18(called the Lower). The Motor City Chain Gang managed to get the PDGA to have 1992 Worlds there. Late in 1991 we carved a extra 18 hole course(the Upper) out of the woods and the entire 36 holes stayed put for a few years after the 92 Worlds but the close proximity of picnic areas to a few holes of the upper 18 forced the city to remove the upper 18. The current 24 hole layout uses a few hole positions from the removed upper 18 but the really memorable "Upper" holes that made that course GREAT are gone. One of the best memories i have on that course was this:

Currently there's a killer 24 hole course there but back in the day, the original 9 hole course was threaded around one of the parks many picnic areas. Brown Deer Park, Wisconsin There is now a wonderful new 18 course installed prior to 2007 AM Worlds. I played the original in the late 1980s. There was no course there for 15 years. I'm glad we've managed to get back in there.
The course in Plymouth, Wis., I believe has been moved from one park to another within the last five years. New course HA Meyer Park. Original park; Twin Oaks.

The old Richmond Hill course (Asheville, NC) was epic. It was my first 'real' disc golf course. Played there with the legend Ted Williams R.I.P.
The land was taken over by the military for an armory. The city built a new course down the street from the old one. There is talk of using some holes from the original course to make a new 18 hole course on the current property. Good place to be a disc golfer!

Extinct - but then relocated across the street - Sherando DGC - Stephens City, VA
Extinct - but then relocated and downsized from 18 to 9 - Kinder Park, in Severna Park, MD
(Already mentioned were Latta Park in Charlotte - home to 1986 PDGA Worlds, and Boylan Family Farm in Laurel Springs, NC)
Not in the directory - and I don't know if it is extinct or not was a tire basket course at the Rodeheavers Boys Ranch in Palatka, FL
Likewise for a 9 hole course on Ft. Lewis, near Tacoma, WA., and one on Carpenters Union property (we always just called it "Carpenter Park" somewhere near Tacoma, WA)
Not sure of the name, but there used to be a 9 holer in a small city park in Bozeman, MT that is now gone.
Rockledge was mentioned - but there were actually two different courses that once existed at different times, and then both went away.

That's awful! Tearing up nice tee pads, signs, and removing baskets to change the course back to original 9 hole ball golf just in order to meet 80 kids' demands?!?

Why not just leave the basket and just add ball hole nearby so everyone can experiences two different kinds of golfing sports? Who knows some of the kids might discover DG better than ball golf??

It just sad that the town has turned blind eye based on the loss of profit for this course.

I suppose we could call the original Sylmar course extinct. A few years ago Bamba Rico, Steve Rico, and Gary Sandoval took it over a redesigned the course. The course is way better now, utilizing the terrain and obstacles more. For a while you could still play the old course safari style by using the old tee-pads and new pin locations that were closest to the old locations (use new 14's pin as old 3's pin). However, almost all of the original tee-pads have been removed, making the old course practically extinct.

Menchville Disc Golf Course in Newport News VA. It was near Menchville High School. It was not the best course to play but it was all that was around here.
Unless you drove all the way to Bayville.

The old baskets have been sitting in storage for several years. The city keeps saying they are going to build another course, and even did a preliminary survey near Yorktown, but they have never done it.

Seriously, I can never believe the litter and vandalism I see on Church courses and other private property where the owner is nice enough to let people come and use the space free of charge.

I'm not sure if this one is listed, but it was an amazing gem that the college students had to ruin...

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1381&mode=ci

For me, it was the best course in Iowa and worthy of a 4.5 disc review (I don't give out 5's easily). The administration is blaming the disc golfers for beer bottles and litter, as well as a brush fire at the north end... I am willing to bet the beer bottles are still there... It's a college campus, of course there is going to be immature drunk @$$holes.

2 In Grand Forks, ND

1. Lincoln Park Course. Was designed by Ed Hedrick back in the day. Got wiped out by a flood in 1997. I can still walk that course, hole by hole, tree by tree in my head.

2. Optimist Park. Built in 1996, removed in 1997. Damn neighbors and their noise complaints. (I helped design and install the course)

I helped build a course when I was in the Youth Civilian Conservation Corps. It was at the Highbanks Metro park In Columbus Ohio. It's long gone now.

i consulted on the design of that one-not really the greatest piece of land. they had to figure out how to install baskets without digging holes because it was on a recently capped landfill (methane issues). if i recall correctly it was put in the ground prior to the park ever actually opening and the city got frustrated with the golfers sneaking in to play. did the park ever actually get opened?

newport news park was already in the ground at that point though- much closer than bayville.

Two Colorado mountain courses have shut down within the past couple of years.

Rocky Mountain Village DGC, a 27 hole course in Empire, CO (closed due to compliances with Colorado child care regulations)

and

Copper Mountain Resort, which as located at the Copper Mountain ski resort (closed due to erosion issues being located on national forest land)

This thread makes me sad.

It looks like 2 in Charlotte are about to hit the chopping block. Veterans Park...http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=906

It's already down a basket, bad kudzu taking over and at some point a dog park is gonna take it's place.

Doral Cavalier...http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2636

Last time I was at Doral there were only 5 of 12 baskets remaining. Those 5 may have been pulled by now(I'll ride down and check it out this week). This area got flooded bad last year and the apartments are being condemned.

Neither course was spectacular, but Veterans was a good warm-up before you hit Kilborne or Sugaw. The good news is there are at least 5 new ones coming before Worlds '12.

Sadly, I can pass on info to add 2 old courses to this list that were along the South Carolina coast.

1. Kiawah Island - In the early 80's, this was the first disc golf course I ever saw and played. I suspect it may have been the first ever in the state. It was a 9-holer in a park near a pool and restaurant, that the public wasn't really supposed to visit. If you told the guard you were going to eat at the restaurant, you would be given a pass to go directly there. But, if you said you just wanted to go play disc golf, it was a no go. You could either go home or visit the public beach at the other end of the island. That's right, you had to LIE to a security guard in order to play! LOL

2. Huntington Beach State Park along the SC Grand Strand near Myrtle Beach, SC - I hear there was a very nice 18 hole course located here (& I never got to play it.). The reason it went down was it got wiped out during Hurricane Hugo on September 22, 1989 (almost 20 years ago now).

A little South of there is the area that really took the worst of that storm surge (dead deer were found 20 feet up in trees!). Supposedly, the money to replace the course was never re-allocated.

I'm not positive, but it sure seems likely. Huntington Beach is a State Park, so they were owned by SC State govt. What entity owns Earlewood park?

Yes, it opened for a short time. But it had vandalism problems (not the best part of town) and everyone went to Newport News Park.

Strong possibility. Assuming this is the case, it's good to know they were put to good use elsewhere in the Palmetto state.

I have been hoping the baskets at Charleston Naval Weapons Station can be moved somewhere else in the local area so more people could use them.

http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1597

See above. It's a shame to see any baskets wasting away where virtually nobody will be able to use them. In this case, however, the baskets are owned by the U.S. Military. They may not want to give them to any local or state park. On the other hand, better where they are than being moved to some base out of town!

The was a private pay-to-play course in Maine, near Bangor I think, called the Happy Banana. It was 9 holes I think. I don't see it in the directory any more, if it's gone it's no great loss as I recall.

since it's the military they probably paid 5 grand apiece for the baskets so are understandably hesitant to give them away.:D

Mission Trails DGC in San Carlos, CA. Used to be both disc and ball golf course but the ball golfers wanted it to be exclusively ball golf so the baskets went bye-bye.

Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL - 9-hole course on the college campus near the football stadium. It was the victim of a huge stadium and parking lot expansion about 10 years ago.

Chastain Park, Atlanta, GA - Great little 9-holer in a city park near north of downtown. Holes played across a cool little gulch. Victim of extreme vandalism that made maintenance costs too great. Pulled in the late '80's or early '90s.I played both of these in the early to mid 90's...sad.:(

Add Redbrush Park (Seymour, IN) and Slayter Hill/Acres (Purdue University) that I used to play in the 80s to the list of the lost...

I still have some memories, I reckon...good times!

You got a point there! I was actually out there just recently and they've cut down the LONG grass that was making those last 4 holes almost unplayable.

It's only 6 miles away (1 turn and a straight road) away from Park Circle too.

Fox Meadows in Andover, MN is gone. Good riddance, that place sucked balls. Just plain not fun at all.

Plus, on the way out my friend wanted to use the Biffy. He entered and immediatley stepped right out. Apparently there was feces smeared EVERYWHERE inside. Door handle too. I almost didn't let him back in my car.

Also in gone in the Mpls/St Paul Metro:

'05 Lone Lake - Minnetonka - errosion issues
'00 (?) Theo Wirth - rumour is that a player told a woman who was walking across a fairway to "move her fat a$$ out of the way" and threw a disc that almost hit her - the guy was confronted by her husband and a heated profanity laced argument ensued- turned out it was the wife of the Park Superintendant who baskets pulled the very next day.

Brown Deer Park, Wisconsin There is now a wonderful new 18 course installed prior to 2007 AM Worlds. I played the original in the late 1980s. There was no course there for 15 years. I'm glad we've managed to get back in there.

My understanding on this matter was it was pulled in '92 or '93 because of the ball golf course going in. Apparently there was to be a driving range where some of the course was. The disc golf club moved the course to Dretzka park.

About a year before the new Brown Deer course went in the GLDGC held a pro/am fundraiser tourney at Brown Deer with Temp. baskets and mostly the original configuration. Barry Schultz was there and some great old schoolers with many stories of the old course. That course was very fun and I'm glad I had the opportunity to play that tournament.

All of that said it turned out to be a blessing in the long run because Dretzka rules and the new Brown Deer is a great challenging championship level course.

This story is presumably true---our most ancient disc golfers tell it repeatedly. Not sure whether it was Huntington Beach, though. The story is that they were at a pay-to-play course, and held lights for night play (under the dome, which has a place for the wiring), which doesn't sound like a state park.

I will confirm for Gamecock that Earlewood is owned by City of Columbia Parks Dept.

Came to post this. That course was amazing. The new one isn't bad by any means but... I miss the old one.

Very interesting topic here. I knew of a course in North Liberty Iowa near lake McBride. I remember seeing it there in the early 90's before I played disc golf. Once I got back into it, I remebered it's location and went to check it out. Gone. From the looks of it it was a nine hole course that had baskets. You can see the fairways and can make out old tee areas. I wished I would of had the chance to play it.
