Well the cold weather is starting it hit the mountain of North Carolina and I went out to buy a pair of gloves today at Dick's. Ended up deciding on a pair of Under Armour Armourstretch Gloves (http://www.rei.com/product/754468). I think they will be warm enough, i dont want anything that makes my hands sweat, but they also thin enough and provide an interesting grip pattern so throwing in them in definitely possible.
What are other people using to keep the hands warm and grippy on those cold winter days?

Broke out the old Marmots just today. They are bulky, but very warm and I take both off when I throw. I, also, moved my bag into the front seat of the car to get as much hot air as possible. Layering is so crucial. Came to school with 3 pairs of pants on, soon I'll be on the course.

I have been thinking about what kind of gloves to get for the cold seasons ahead, thanks for the suggestion. The grip pattern almost seems a must to get some snap with gloves on.

about 15 yrs. ago I installed satellite dishes year round. In the winter, I bought a pair of neoprene hunter's gloves. They had slits under the first joint of each finger that you could pull up and over to expose your fingertips. They were super warm and skintight with a tacky, rubber palm. I just started playing disk golf this summer. I've never played in cold weather. I don't know if these will work, but I wanted to pass along the info.

Those are pretty sweet, but I wonder if the mitten part would flap when you threw. My bulky gloves were great yesterday and I shot well @ 40F. Looks like it's time to put away the dx plastic. I don't seem to mind taking the gloves off and like not changing anything about my throw, other than seemingly bulking up with the extra layers.

There is a piece of velcro on most of these types gloves that holds it to the back of your hand area.

The problem with those are that thumb pressure is so vital to spin that leaving the thumb padded up would severely affect any of my throws.

This the best way to go imo.
The pro side, you only have your bare hand in the elements during the throw.
The Con side, you look michael jackson teeing of.. don't forget to spin and point. :D lol

Throw one of those hand warmer packs into your bag too.. it helps keeps your discs warm. :)

Hand warmers are a must for cold weather disc golf. Instead of gloves I just usually throw one of these in each pocket and keep my hands in my pockets until I throw... Then again I live in Atlanta where it doesn't really get too terribly cold for too long.

QFT.

I've been playing in ~40ºF for the past couple of weeks and I haven't had to get gloves yet. But when that time comes I'll be wearing one glove all the time while the other hand is nestled in a pocket with a hand warmer. Ahh yes.

i bought some gloves from Dunhams that had little rubber circles on the palm and the finger tips were open(including the thumb) and there was no flap to cover the tips of your fingers which is good and bad since you dont want it flapping during your throw but you also want them for covering your hands. not bad for 11 bucks

What about a pair of insulated wide receiver gloves for grip?
Personally I wear a nice warm glove on my left hand and keep my right hand (throwing hand) in my pocket. Gloves always seem to mess up my throws (... maybe that line belongs on the excuses forum)

I just keep my hands in my pockets, I can't throw at all with gloves on and taking them off for every shot is really annoying. Don't forget your towel when playing in the snow.

I know its not legal in a sanctioned event, but when throwing with friends in the sub freezing weather, I wear a regular winter snow shoveling type glove on my left hand, and a $4.00 Walmart raquetball glove on my right. It doesn't affect my grip or release at all, and keeps the hand from freezing and cracking.

not sure on gloves that a good to actually wear while throwing but here's a tip that may help: Last time I went out in the cold to play I layered up under a hoodie. Im RH so my left hand had a glove on at all times and when not throwing i would slide my right hand into the hoodie pouch where I had a hand warmer packet. My RH was glove less for the entire round yet stayed warm and ready to toss.

PDGA Rule 802.04 Artificial Devices
A. During a round, a player shall not use any artificial device that may assist in making a throw, except those devices that reduce or control abrasion to the skin (such as gloves, tape, bandages, gauze, etc.) and medical items (such as knee and ankle braces, etc.). Items used to prevent slipping on the teeing surface are also allowed. A player is specifically prohibited from using any artificial device that changes the position of the disc in the player’s hand or artificially lengthens any of the player’s throwing levers (fingers, wrist, arm, shoulder, etc.).

I've been using one of these on my throwing hand the last few days in the zero degree weather:

A hoodie or jacket pocket, or a muff (like NFL QB's use), or a mitten with a hand warmer in it is the key thing. In extreme cold, like around zero, I sometime throw with a glove on, and I use very cheap "fits either hand" knit gloves without seams, and with latex dots. But even then that hand immediately goes back in next to a hand warmer.

I use these, and really like them. Mittens for walking, fingerless for throwing. It's still not the same as throwing with a bare hand, but it's close, and I don't believe it violates any rules.

I use cheap no slip gloves from walmart...they are $8 dark gray and have a rubbery palm and fingers on them. I only wear it for the really cold days, and don't play tournaments in them...so the legality of this doesn't matter to me. I wear this on my throwing hand and a big bulky warm winter glove on the other.

The mitten keeps you warmer, but the fact that it folds back means you can really grip with your fingers.

Honestly I've yet to find a glove that worked. I played 2 rounds in the snow this weekend and I had had a glove on my non throwing hand but found I couldn't throw with one on so I eventually just took the gloves off and kept my hands warm in a pocket. Having hand warmers in a jacket pocket would be pretty clutch

I never wear gloves for discing. I always put pocket warmers in my pocket and keep my hand there until I am ready to throw. Throw the disc and put my hand back in. That way I can throw normally, with a glove it interferes with the grip.

Careful, because you don't want that in the snow. If you keep your discs cold the snow won't stick to them. If they're warm the snow will.

Yeah the only issue I could see and would hope they wouldn't be is overly grippy. But for throwing a drive I would think over grippyness could keep the disc from "tearing out" of your hand like it should.

i wear a glove on my left hand, put the warmer in my right pocket and i'm good to bout 15degrees, never golfed colder than that

I posted this in another thread, they really work! The brand is Ansell, I found them at Menard's for under $4 a pair.

For me the only issue I have with playing in the cold is having my grip suffer because of cold hands and wet discs from snow. I found a set of electricians gloves at lowes for under $5 that I can actually throw with, they have fabric backs and rubberized palms and fingers, and fit very tightly with no seams. They seem to give a great grip even with wet champ/z discs, and keep my hands from getting nearly as cold.

This picture shows the back, but you can see the rubbery material that comes up over the tips of the fingers:

Not too good to be true, but not the warmest things in the world either. They're definately better than no glove at all. Between those gloves and your pocket, that should be enough insulation to keep your fingers from getting too icy. I got a few pairs from ACE hardware for $2 each (on sale). I've only used them a few times to play disc golf, but I've played many a game of fricket using them and they work pretty well.

I've done OK with fingerless/thumbless gloves. Something like these;

Mine are several years old.

FWIW as a treatment for cracked and splitting hands I also recommend "Bag Balm". Available at Wallgreens. It's an antiseptic treatment for chapped cow udders. It's greasy and it stinks but one treatment and those annoying cracks that bleed and burn are healed overnight.

I've been using hunting mittens that we've had a while. The "mitten" part flips back to show your fingers for when a hunter is going to pull the trigger, or for us to throw a disc. Toss a hand warmer in the end and it's very warm.

Buy the like 6 or 8 or 12 pack or whatever you can find.

Then start by using one in your playing hand.

My dad uses one in each pocket with a thin glove on his non-throwing hand.

I bring them but have really great pockets so I don't need them unless it's bitter cold and really windy.

I cant throw very good with a glove on.
How I keep my throwing hand warm depends on the conditions.
If its just chilly I like using the kangaroo pouch in a hoody for my throwing hand, its more comfortable with my hand in front of me when I'm wallking, then having it in a jacket side pocket.
When it goes from chilly to cold, I add a handwarmer to the pocket.
When its gets ball freezing out, with deep snow, I use a winter mitten, which I slide in the kangaroo pocket.
A mitten is really easy to slide your hand in and out of, and because it allows your fingers to stay together in one compartment, its warmer than a glove.
Stuffing the mitten in the kangaroo pouch means I dont leave it lying on the ground every time I take it off to throw, that way I dont loose it.
This system has worked for me playing in anything down to about 0°, below that, its pretty much gonna be inside mini golf time.
