Good question baz, you've scratched the surface of one of the many things I ponder. Years ago I read an article that said people who attended or graduated from college reached a higher level of analytical thinking than virtually all those that didn't. Not saying that people couldn't reach that level independently of college but for the most part this holds weight (think how popular American Idol is, lol). I always wonder about the correlation b/w academics being religious skeptics and the vast, un-college educated masses being head over heels in your major world religions. It seems to me, that your major world religions (Christianity, Islam, etc) are very ritual based, rich in story telling, and orderly. In other words, very user-friendly. Atheism, skepticism, agnosticism, etc are much colder, unemotional approaches for spiritual reconciliation and therefor not for everybody.
