Um…..how about Jesus’ “love your neighbor as yourself”? When asked “who is your neighbor?”, he told the famous story of the good Samaritan. He put it back in the Jews’ face (especially the religious elite) that racial, ethnic, and national hatred had no place in an economy of love.
I mentioned the second part of this (the good Samaritan part) as it is directly applicable to what we have seen in this country in a very sad part of our history, and the circumstances people entered into slavery back in the time that the passage in question was written.
Now, while this is not an explicit commandment “thou shalt not treat humans as property”, it is crystal clear to anyone paying attention that that would not be “loving your neighbor as yourself”.
