2011 Ice Bowl
So, there are decisions to be made.
The only problem with running the Ice Bowl at Ber Juan is that all the money does not go to charity. The registration money and disc sales money goes to the City, only the mulligan money goes to charity.
We could run an Ice Bowl at Lion's Club, but we don't have a Club or any money to buy any merch or basically do anything. We also don't have permission from the Lion's Club to do it, although I think we would get it for a charity event. So unless somebody has two or three hundred dollars to front a Club that you won't get back for years, running an Ice Bowl is going to be hard to do.
Everyone donates food and that is fine, but the big impact on food banks is the cash. They are looking for cash donations to get what they need. So if we are going to run an effective charity drive we need to raise some cash.
One thing we can do is take a buck off the top when we play whatever league goes on at Lions Club for the charity drive. That way we as a group of disc golfers will have raised some money to donate to the Ice Bowl charity. Any other ideas to raise some cash would be appreciated.
At any rate, the City wants to know about the Ice Bowl. Ber Juan is supposed to go to 18 holes I guess (still haven't seen a planned design, so I really don't know) so in theory the 9 hole vs 18 holes should not be a factor. There are some advantages to having the City involved. They get stuff out into the local media and give a visible spot to promote an event. They have a nice warm room right there by # 1. They front the money for Ice Bowl merchandise and eat the loss when it all does not sell. The problem is that they can't do something for free, and that hurts the charity drive.
What do you guys want to do? Should we keep it at Ber Juan or try to do it ourselves at Lion's Club?
I guess we should have a Club formation meeting, since we need to have our act together. 6:30 in the pavilion at Ber Juan on 9/21 (after league.)
So I guess the city would not be interested in taking some off of the top for charity? I guess that would get messy anyway in determining which charity...
I vote for forming the club and approaching Lion's Club with it.
I went through this from the other side. I ran an Ice Bowl for the City of Hazelwood. You get laws and City policies and a bunch of crud involved that makes it very hard for a City to donate cash. It can be done, but the people in charge have to really want it to happen. In my case the director at the time didn't want it to happen; she wanted to keep the program income. So it was a dead end talking about turning over registration fees.
What we did instead was start an auction to raise money. We auctioned off discs, bags, portable baskets and whatever else we could get donated. It was a lot of work. Bob Waidmann picked that up when I left and still runs that auction; if anybody can make it to the Hazelwood Ice Bowl you will see how you can make an event with a City work. After 20+ years of that event the Club has gotten the City to agree to donate 1/2 of the entry fees, and the auction brings in a bunch of additional money. The Club also runs a Winter Series with low payouts and the money they make goes to the Ice Bowl charity. They turned over a $2,500 check to the St. Louis Area Food Bank the last time I made it there. So it can be done.
In the case of Rolla we would have to meet with the people at the parks department and ask first before we would know anything about what they would be willing to do. Right now I only know what they said last year, but everything was new to them then. Things might be different now.
The charity last year was GRACE (Greater Rolla Area Charitable Enterprise.) Kristy set that up. I guess they have a food bank; I really could not find much info out about them online.
