The Great 8
Have you ever dreamed of playing disc golf from sunrise to sundown? If so, come join us to play 144 holes on 8 central NC courses in one day! The Great Eight, North Carolina's 11th annual Disc Golf Ironman competition, will be held on Sat. June 20th. We start at dawn and play until dark.
We only play doubles for flow of play, so find a partner and come tackle these eight courses.
The emphasis is on having fun meeting the challenge, but there are also awards in several categories as well as several extra prizes.
Pre-registration is required
because we start at dawn. There are only a limited number of spots available, and we expect a full field, so don't delay.
Unfortunately, I’ll have to give you the registration details soon because we’ve run into a glitch in the system. So check back here often for more details.
Since this is "my baby" I gave it it's own thread. My friend, Mark Faggion, and I started the Great 8 in ten years ago, but Jay Pontier is now the TD. He does a fantastic job!
Lots of people on the other thread have expressed interest in playing, so feel free to chime in here. You won't be considered as registered until your money is received, though. That info will finalized very soon.
I'm looking forward to setting the GrandMasters record since I turned 50 this year!
Here's the venue of courses:
Zebulon Community Park, Zebulon
Cedar Hills, Raleigh
Buckhorn, New Hill
UNC, Chapel Hill
Valley Springs, Durham
You can find more information at the
Great 8 website
. I'm sorry, but there have been some technical difficulties and the website isn't fully functional yet. Registration should be working by May 17, but you should go ahead and email Jay Pontier now, to let him know that you're interested. Your registration won't be final until you've paid, though. We expect to fill again, so you probably want to check the website every day until you're registered. In addition to discs in the Players Pack there will also be substantial prizes for a long drive contest, a last shot of the day CTP, and Ring of Fire. These are only available to players who finish all 8 courses, though.
This sounds great and I'd love to play it. I unfortunately work Saturdays teaching in the summer, but I'm pretty sure I can get the day off (thank goodness for TA's!). My real problem is I don't have any disc golf partners in the area that would be willing to do that much throwing. Is anyone on here looking for a partner or know someone who needs one? You can look up my scorebook to see my skill level and feel free to PM me with any questions or leads!
That sounds real cool, unfortunately I don't live close to Raleigh and with the shape of my game right now, I don't know if I'm up to playing all day just yet. You guys have fun.
Have 2010 dates for The Great 8 been set yet? I don't see it posted on the website yet.
I'm seriously thinking of making the trip from Charlotte to participate this year.. perhaps even with my wife joining as my doubles partner. The Charlotte Amateur Championship will be June 19-20, 2010 (last year's Great 8 date was June 20th), so we were trying to find out when it would be this year to plan accordingly.
**EDIT - 4/25/10**
I decided to go ahead and give Jay a call. He expects The Great 8 to be held on July 24, 2010. He also mentioned some course changes (keeping it in the Triangle area this year, dropping Cedarock & Wellspring), and he plans to get the website updated sometime this week. So, my wife & I are making plans to be there, and hope to see many of you out there for a LOT of disc golf fun!
