If you've played for any amount of time and visited our beautiful middle Tennessee courses you've undoubtedly enjoyed a round at Seven Oaks. It has history going back to large A tiers in years gone by (flyingdiscdrive for any of you old enough to remember what that was), and thanks to Cloud9discgolf may very well host an A tier again next year. The course is undeniably fun to play and a real challenge to players at any skill level.
There is a large contingent of guys that (figuratively)live (and 1 that literally does) at that park. Their work parties have more people show up to help than any other course I've seen, and they keep the place looking top notch year round. I think that the course has a great deal of stuff going for it and I try to play after work there at least once a week because I enjoy playing the layout so much. The park is always packed so you know that they have a huge following. And now through their partnership with Cloud9discgolf they are getting exposure through the ClashDVD series filming the 2011 Music City Open. All good stuff!
So now I have to ask... Why is this the only course where drinking and Marijuana use is so common that the users no longer even attempt to hide their activities? I have become numb to it all and no longer even get offended by it. The guys are fine people and all, but they will take out their little one-hitter pipes and toke up on the teebox in front of everybody before a throw. It's more common to see a player carrying a tallboy than a bottle of water on that course, so much so that there are not 1, but 2 guys that pilfer through their trashcans daily to collect the aluminum cans.
What the hell is going on? As a non-smoker and a dad with kids, I try to keep my boys away from that stuff. Every time I step onto that course I feel as if I've fallen into another dimension where the laws against drug use no longer apply. The final nail in the coffin for me was when I heard the apt named nickname for the place that just fits like a glove. "Seven Tokes". Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
I’m not trying to tell any of you what to do with your private lives. If you want to smoke or drink at home or in your car, thats your business. But when you bring it out in public for everyone else to see, you're basically telling us that you don’t give a crap who knows how you roll. I'd love to hear from some of the club members out there to get the other side of the story. And let's all try to act like grown ups and keep conversation this civil.
They do have great work parties. I mean look at the course it always looks nice. I think it is another way for them to drink and smoke more.
I have noticed that out of all of the MTDGC's 7 Oaks is the one where there is more abundant use of mary jane and alcohol. I couldn't tell you a reason why but I think it may due to it being mainly a full wooded course.
