Straddle putting, off foot
So imagine you are straddle putting.
My idea was that youdraw a imaginary line from the basket to your marker ( line A ), and that you have to have your off foot behind a line that goes vertical to the imagined line A trough your mini. Now in the rules it only says "not closer to the basket". Which would imply a circle around the basket with the radius marker -> basket. Which one is correct ? edit : http://images.onlinemathe.de/images/...77b9d3f26f.jpg P is your marker. Where can you have your off foot, on the blue line or on the circle ? |
If the rule says not closer to the basket, then it's the circle. Hard to argue otherwise.

I am definitely no expert; but I would say the circle.
Basically, the line r you have drawn should be from the basket to the center of your straddle putt stance, right? And not the marker. But, you have to have your foot on the marker. That is where the discrepancy arises. So, I vote on the circle, because the marker doesn't coincide with the center of the straddle stance. |
If you're tall enough, you could probably stand with each foot on opposite sides of the basket for a drop in if your mark is right by the basket.

Think I am going to try that if I get the chance. Just to see what people say. Always good to provoke a small rules chat. :) |
I had this discussion with a guy on my card @ my league final. He said to use the circle. I would tend to believe him, he's been around a while and is always helping people with rules, technique, etc. This was for inside the putting area (10 meters). Outside of that I usually use the line, as to not give anyone grounds to call anything.

So whether you use the circle or the line out there should not change how you place your feet really. |
Yeah it's not much, but inside the circle I'm not worried about having my off foot a little further back now. I can just line up comfortably and start. Outside 10 meters I consciously place my off foot a tad further back.

Definitely the circle, as the rule implies.

Garr, it be the circle matey.
