I think they've been doing stuff like this for a long time. It's just that the marketing has changed. Rather than promoting them as new molds they promote them as tweaks to old molds.

Yeah, it's more of an interesting fact than a useful one. You don't try to throw them faster, they just come out of your hand faster given the same throw. People have verified this using radar guns.
