I am LHBH and RHFH, so I know the frustration.
Two things:
First, getting a reliable anny disc is essential. I use a beat-up *Wedge, a beat-up ESP Comet and a VIP Tursas. Haven't found a turnover...

Don't place too much faith in those flight ratings. Innova originally made the Eagle in DX plastic, and the flight ratings are a good match for DX plastic.
However, if you have a normal Champ...

They'll fly 300 feet "on a rope" if thrown...

First, it's GREAT that you can share a round of DG with your wife. Be thankful for that.

Second, your perceived lack of distance is probably form-related.

Third, when you learn to throw, don't...

Trying too hard on Thumbers (like most throws) is murder for distance.
Back off the effort, and ramp up the smooooth.
Don't forget to give it a bit of snap when you let it go.
Release it...

My favorite plastic is Innova's G-star. Good colors, gorgeous swirls, soft but not floppy, durable but "seasonable".
I like a stiffer plastic for the putter, Prodigy's 750.
