He was either messing with you or wrong, haha. Hold the disc wherever you like, but I personally don't like feeling the letters and always hold a smooth part of the disc. It just makes me feel good.

Speed is such a bs number, almost as silly as glide! If a disc goes far for you then great, otherwise find something that works better for you. The King is a 2.3cm width so I'm not sure it qualifies...
