I totally agree with the panther advise. I have one and it's used just for this very thing. If you're looking for an even flatter finish you might want to consider firing off a putter.

You don't have to be a pro to understand the level ground logic. I've always thought that pads should be circular anyways. Coercing players into throwing a certain direction is impractical.
