I love doing that also

Dude, who cares? They're enjoying themselves. And I've learned to keep my mouth shut. I mocked my friend up and down the course for throwing a Nuke SS on hole 9 at Dalaiwood. It was about 150' on a very slight uphill, so I threw a Drone casually while he decided to throw a Nuke. The end result? He skipped up next to the basket both times through, and I bounced off the same tree twice.

Plus, if they're getting 200' with a Nuke that's probably their max D at this point and any disc is going to have the same effect. Let 'em enjoy it. If they want to learn how much smarter we are than they are they can find this forum and we'll introduce them to Johnny.

Sometimes people have to learn the hard way. Case in point, me. When I first started playing, I purchased the standard Innova starter set. Leopard, Shark, Avair. I was in TX at the time. I was told there was course 16 miles from my house, so I went there to check it out. First throw, Leopard in the lake. It was made of plastic so I figured it would float. After waiting for a couple of minutes, I picked up the phone and called my friend who got me hooked on this sport and asked him WTH? Dude you have to buy discs that float. Well now you tell me. Went on and played 7 more holes and lost the putter. Of course the lake is in play on 10 of the 18 holes, so being discouraged I went home with my 1 disc. Went to a Dicks sporting goods store and saw they had discs. Sweet, look at that cool Wraith I tell myself, and buy it. Not knowing that I had no business throwing a wraith, and still don't after 2+ years of playing. Picked up another putter and an Eclipse. The Eclipse made it maiden voyage into the same lake. Still didn't learn my lesson about what I should be throwing until doing some research on here. Now I'm using discs that I can handle. The fastest thing that is in my bag right now is a Sidewinder.
Point is sometimes you buy things that look cool or sound cool. I know it is strange but I used to throw a Katana, because everyone said Nuke, Nuke, Nuke, and I was told a Katana was similar so when I saw one in the store I picked it up. I don't throw it anymore because I just don't have the arm speed for it. But there was a time when I would have pulled that Katana out and threw it at a 252 hole.

My little brother (21, so not so little) who is an avid ball golfer will come out an play once in awhile. He refuses to take any advice to the point of getting extremely pissed off and going off on tantrums. If I try an give him advice and he throws a bad shot he blames me. I now say nothing to him, or anyone unless they see receptive to it.

The best way I've found is giving discs away. If you don't want them throwing a Nuke... give them a Leopard, Roc, or other "appropriate" disc. The adage of "don't look down on somebody unless you're helping them up" seems especially relevant here.

I was a little surprised to see a Nuke laying on the ground, about 50ft from the basket , on a 255ft , fairly wide open hole. Why would you throw such a disc on a short hole like that? I was going to ask, but I have learned just to keep my mouth shut, and play my own game.

How can we educate newer players to try mids, and fairway drivers, and leave the high speed drivers alone till you get better?

The disc manufacturers could give all the highspeed drivers more feminine names...........

If you are brand new to the game, why wouldn't you want to throw a nuke, destroyer, boss, ape, etc........?

Two words: Love. Them.

The River flies like a slightly less understable (more stable?) Leopard with glide in spades. The Pure was great for me immediately in Grip. I picked one up in Opto and found it to be far too understable for me to drive... Then I started working on correcting the form flaws that were really to blame for it turning over, and lo and behold... It's a spectacular disc. I throw it on any approach up to about 150', and will probably stretch that out a lot more as I get to know it better.

I did it, Im still a noob, Im sure most of us have. You go in and see things like "superfast" "Max distance" maybe even "overstable" and you think oh well this will go farther and fly really fast..exactly what I thought. you dont understand that when it says superfast it really means you need to throw it superfast. Thing is I did ask the guy at the disc golf store, because from the posters I could tell the discs I had were for more advanced players. He was basically like yeah maybe you should try a Valk, even tried to find one, but you shouldn't be too bad with those. He did say I could trade them out for something else if I really hated them.

I then proceeded to take my superfast Halo and Reaper onto a little course and threw the halo nearly even hole, because its the driver....there are maybe 1 or 2 holes that are even over 400...maybe. It would go up turn hard left and drop. I saw tons of other players throwing dead straight drives.

Hey though I did have a lot of fun so there was that. Once I got that out of my system I came here for some real advice.

I went to a store even a few days ago and told the guy I had just started and got some discs that were too fast for me. He proceeded to pull out 3 blizzard Wraiths and said these should be ok , yes they're "only" speed 9, but I told him I've literally played one time. In his defense he also recommended a Buzz too.

So I guess it kinda comes from a few things. A lot of it is the cool or wow factor because of what they put on the discs.. that's by design. A lot of it is ego too, you buy that superfast driver and your like I can throw this...maybe I can do it better then everyone else or I'm strong I should be able to throw that.

As for going up to someone on the course and offering unsolicited advice...honestly I think to most people it would come off as douchy and they would just ignore you at best and maybe even get a little angry and confrontational at worst.

Just remember 9 times out of 10 even if they're throwing a disc they have no business throwing they're still having fun. Hopefully eventually they will care enough to actually get some good advice from someone.
