Thumbs up SE Michigan ~ St. Clair County areas

Proposing Disc Golf to parks in St. Clair County Michigan

Alright folks, we're in the process of proposing the installation of disc golf courses in St. Clair County Michigan. So far we are proposing three courses spread throughout the county. Each park has a river, woods, and open fields, throughout the park's boundaries. Each park would have the ability to contain 18 holes or more of a Disc Golf Course.

Northern section: Baker's Field Park ~ Years ago a proposal by another party fell through but we have the chance to do it right this time. A relocation of Holland Woods (9-Hole course) down the street to Bakersfield Park could be the the best possible option for this area to get a 18-hole course. Baker's Field Park has the space and terrain to contain a large disc golf course.

Central section: Columbus County Park ~ This is the most ideal location for a possible disc golf course. The large park is capable of having a 5 star course with it's outstanding landscape. Everything you could want in terrain is there. The only downside is that the park is newer and is still undergoing construction in some areas.

Southern section: East China Township Park ~ Another great location at a mature park. Just a few years ago a new disc golf course was in the planning process but fell to the wayside without the proper guidance of experienced people. The park infastructures and amenities are already in place. This is the busiest of the three parks and concessions might be needed to accomadate all park users and their safety.

Please sign the epetition http://sccparks.epetitions.net/ to show your support for disc golf in our area. We only have the 9-hole course in Port Huron and need to act fast to add these courses to the P & R Master Plans that are due for renewal very soon. Post your petition signature # in this dgcr marketplace thread for a chance to win some discs.

Thanks again for helping the cause to get Disc Golf Courses for St.Clair County. I'll be updating everyone on the process as it goes. Volunteers and/or donations are always welcome and I will inform you guys when the courses are approved.

Just recieved word on the Ira Twp Park course. They have it almost complete. We just need to get a work day put together to finish the course. It's in the newly acquired part of the park and it looks pretty good for the limited amount of land available.

Anyone interested in helping out?

Three Course Developments
Updated 1/20/2012...

Southern section: East China Township Park ~ After a small presentation and a info packet, the Twp likes the disc golf course idea and will look at some of our course designs. So far so good. They also need some more detailed quotes, inventory of donated equipment and installation costs. Next meeting in Feb.

Central section: Columbus County Park ~ Attended the quarterly CCP Park Advisory Board Meeting and found out that we will be in the Updated P & R Master Plan. We can start coming up with designs which they will look over to see what will be best for the park and it's future. Looking at designing a 9-holer near the new Lodge and will also submit two 18-hole designs for the future when the other two sections of the park have the parking lots, restrooms, etc. built. One step closer.

Northern section: Baker's Field Park ~ I've only been able to attend one meeting back in December but hope to have everything ready by next month's meeting. Did have a chance to walk some of the park but my son and I were thwarted off by some nasty rough patches of thorn bushes. There is quite a bit of land here and has some great potential if they could get the trails in better shape. I also found an older park design which had a disc golf course in the plans. It looked promising.

Ira Twp update ~ Haven't heard anything new but will stop by their next meeting on Monday to see if we can help.

It takes time, trust, and a whole lot of meetings but it will be worth it in the end. I'm positive that if we do things right, they will see how great disc golf can really be for the parks.

wow thats some great work!

just dont make it like brys park in st clair shores. disc golf and joggers do NOT mix and it only makes disc golf look bad. please do your best to avoid well traveled paths in the parks. dont want to huck a 300 ft bomb only to hit some playground or picnic area.

Updated AUG 2012...

IRA Twp Park (9 Holes-Dual Tees) ~ course is now open

East China Twp Park (Original 9) ~ course is currently under-construction. Planning to have it ready by this fall. Hoping for the 18-hole approval after Original 9 takes off!

Columbus County Park (Original 9) ~ Course is in mapping and design stages. Observing and surveying the park land for best possible layout. TBD

Baker's Field Park ~ Haven't heard anything from them but there were plans for a future course there. Will have to check back when time allows.

Tomahawk Park ~ (18-27 holes with 18 Baskets) Private Course ~ Playable but parts of the land are off-limits until OCT 1. There are some dead Ash trees that haven't been removed yet but most have been cut. ACE RACE on Sept 2, 2012

Sage Creek ~ (15 holes as of July 2012) Haven't checked it out yet but it was built by a fellow DGer in Memphis, MI.

Other potential parks...
Kimball Twp Park ~ There is some land there but only enough for a decent 9-hole course around the outside boundaries. It's also closed up for winters

China Twp Park ~ Two parks a few miles apart but heavily wooded.

Goodells County Park ~ Might as well pitch a course here. Depending on what land will be available, it has the potential for 18 holes.
There are a few more parks that I've checked out but they might be a stretch...
