I think a log with a pipe in the bottom would look great, sort of like a tree stump.They would be cheap and blend into the course well. Or something out of concrete, Bunny rabbits, mushrooms, lawn gnomes...

I like the PVC pipes sticking out of the ground because if you're not familiar with the course it makes it easy to tell where the basket is from a distance, by having a visible marker of where it isn't.

I've also seen some courses protect their alternate pins by having a small 3' or so circle of concrete or gravel around all of the positions. Not all that aesthetically pleasing, but it works.

Seen on numerous DGCR course descriptions: "Dual Tees Make 18". No they don't. They make a nine hole course with a set of alternate tees. Please stop writing this nonsense on course descriptions to make a nine holer seem more than it is.
