It's tradition for the first round to announce the groups at the player meeting so they are kept secret until then. The tee times for the remaining rounds are published earlier.

I know. It's a neat tradition. But it's bad for spectators. And I'd argue a bit unprofessional.

Announcing tee times the night before the event is "non-major-event-ish"? Compared to what? What other majors even have tee times? The tee times for day one of USDGC get announced and published at about the same time as they do for day two, three, and four...the evening before.
