I have a buddy that thinks that within 10m you should have a clear and unobstructed shot at basket - no limbs hanging in your face, no little trees in your way etc. |

I think it can be a little bit silly as it can punish a closer shot but as long as you know that off the tee box... |

Defeated.
But Winthrop DOES have more unobstructed greens than anywhere else around here I can think of. It's almost enough to invite Pete May up to build some artificial obstacles. At any rate, for the player who was described as thinking there should be nothing inside the 10-M circle, the course we're discussing pretty much qualifies.

You can get some pretty funky putts there from within the circle, however.
1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 15, 16 and 18 all have greens where you don't have a clear 10 M circle. Granted most courses have about 16 holes you can say this... For the record, Steed Park in Richlands, NC has the most unobstructed greens I've ever seen. Literally 17 of them have nothing (except OB) within 10 Meters of the basket. http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1741

Where I tested it, it was not suited well......hence even more complaints than I anticipated. Where it could work really well is on some shorter holes than would be ideal for the players competing. It would effectively cut the landing/putting zone by around 15-20% thereby encouraging/forcing appreciably better placement for a birdie. Simple implementation - just hung it on the band: |

dave, i could see that working on a open event where ther a couple of holes that are 200-250', too short for challenge. This would effectively close a small portion of the landing area to them.
But, i would prefer a rope island created. Make it close to one side of the basket and longer on another to "Force" people to use more accuracy to one side, or pay the consequence. I think the way you accomplished the challenge is fairly gimmicky, and i would dislike it. thoroughly BUT the concept you are going for is GREAT and i think needs looked at for sure.

i like the idea of the board in the basket forcing a little more thought into shot placement for the putt but man i would be PO'd if i had a sweet ace run ruined by that thing...
