What do you say to a disc diving card mate?

Partly inspired by threads like this, I have written the following message on discs I consider to be irreplaceable..."Reward if found AND returned."

FWIW, my name, PDGA # and Phone # have been there for a while.

I have lost 2 of them with the reward message and received a call on one from a kid that sounded like he was 10 or 11 years old. I immediately offered him $10 or 2 new discs...his choice.

He said that he would be back at the park in the next week or 2. Even though I don't live anywhere near that course, I offered to meet him there. Long story short, still don't have my trusty valk after several calls and texts in an attempt to give this punk more than what he probably should get in this situation.

I will be going out this weekend to try to rake out some disc from a local course in the small pond before it freezes over for the winter. I have a disc in there and my friend has a disc in there. I've been checking the local page to see if there may be others in there but I am going to make every effort I can to return discs that may belong to someone.

If I lost a disc and someone happened to find it even in the water I would want it returned so I am treating the situation that way.

How old is he? If he's 10 or 11 he should not be meeting anyone in a park.

Certainly.

I'm not even trying to disparage the disc keepers, or convince them to change their ways. But I find some of their justifications and arguments logically puzzling, sometimes amusingly so (to me, at least), so thought I'd probe the underlying principles.

I find the comparisons amusing also, I just want to make sure everyone stays focused on what we're talking about. Discs.

That's why I see a disctinction between (1) what a disc finder should do and (2) how big a deal the disc owner should make of it if he doesn't.

#1 is return it and #2 is, not much of one.

I have no idea. I did not ask...just sounded like a young kid. I could be waaaaaay off with my 10-11 estimate.

All I know is that he called me and said that he found my valk. I said, "Thanks, I'd be more than happy to give you $10 or 2 discs in return."



I agree...if he is that young he should not be meeting me or anyone else in a park on his own. However, I didn't want to offend him by asking to speak to his parents if I was wrong about his age. For all I know, it could have been a woman on the phone.

Doubt it. I know most, if not all of the Chicago-area DGCR members.

If that were the case, I'd like to hope/trust that they would not still be toying with me 4 months after finding my trusty star valk.
