Havent played hornets nest yet, but when i was living in charlotte i liked Renny the best and Reedy is a fun course for a quick 18 holes....if its not super packed.

Update: I played Hornet's (not Web) on my way to the Raptor Center (which is awesome!) on Saturday. First time at Hornet's in years -- since before the end of the Front 9 was re-configured.

Verdict: I still don't like it. Okay, I only played holes 1-7. If only I could throw 400 ft like MJ, then maybe holes #1, #2, and #6 would make sense. Instead, it's just drive-nags-putt. (nags = not a golf shot)

The back has always been pretty good, but with 3 huge blemishes in the first 6 holes, ugh.

Oh well, maybe someday I'll grow to love it -- but I won't hold my breath.

Interesting observation. While all 3 fit into the "> 350 ft par 3" family, I'm wouldn't consider them blemishes. # 1 requires a skilled upshot (for a noodle arm like me) to leave yourself an easy putt. A poor upshot can very quickly leave a tough putt for 3. # 2 is one of the few open drives in Charlotte, a welcomed sight for those who relish the opportunity to throw a driver at 100% power. Still a touchy upshot but scoring seperation is probably pretty low (for intermediate or rec players). # 6 requires hitting a moderate tunnel line with OB lurking on the right for counter-clockwise throws like my LHBH drive. I see a surprising high % of throws go OB on this hole. Each has different attributes so I don't find them repetitive. Definitely not holes with great chances are birdies (for us that max out a 350-360 ft) which can reduce/eliminate their "fun factor" but holes that still challenge the player to make good golf shots and can provide scoring seperation.

Don't get me wrong, I've probably played the Nest ten times and have only had two or three times I could have "ran at" a putt on those instead of lagging/upshoting at the pin. Nowhere near as much fun as ace running every hole (like Bailey's Road) or having legitamite birdie opportunites. But I to me that doesn't make them a bad/poor hole.

I live in Plaza-Midwood so Kilbourne is my home course. I doubt that I will ever park a drive under that basket at #1 or 3 (and won't birdie them unless I hit a really long putt or upshot), which can be frustrating. They do provide good scoring seperation though as each one has a challenged pin position requiring a good upshot to par on a consistent basis.
