In my opinion, playing (not playing) to preserve your rating, is playing for the wrong reasons. DG should be fun, at least if it's something you want to spend time enjoying. Constant concern over the rating and overall performance just degrades the experience, and detrimental to performance. My focus is on having fun by focusing on the task (shot) at hand - not winning, not my rating. not previous poor shots.
Play tournaments, have fun, meet new people, get better at your game. Your rating will be what it is, it will increase as you improve through the years - if anything I find it interesting to look back and see the progress.
Also a high rating has very little benefit - what, bragging rights and fewer sandbagging cat calls. Being courteous, friendly, and overall a pleasant person to be with will garner much more respect on the course than any number will.
