Question about spin painting

First of all, I need to thank all of the posters on these boards who are sharing their knowledge and taking the time to put it order on these forums.

Using the shaving cream method, I've been able to produce some pretty cool looking discs; at least I'm happy with them.

I've also recently rigged up an old box fan into a spin table ( thanks Dan & Rayne) and plan on trying the spin painting technique to make some rings.

So could somebody help me out with the order here? I can't seem to wrap my head around the concept of whether to mask off the area where I want the rings and paint them on after dying the rest, or can you just paint over once you've dyed.

It's your choice. I mask the outer ring because it's hard to get the bw's all the way to the edge of the disc, masking off the outer part eliminates that problem.

I usually dye then spin. For something like this, I dyed the black portion first, left the center masked and peeled off the rest, and then spun over the top of it, creating a background but letting Bob's chest sort of pop out of the frame.

Nice composition on that Marley disc.

What do you use to thicken your dye?
