Ok. Writing this based on my first tournament experience with doubles.
Granted this was our major club in the area's state double's championship, I think the format was awesome. I played in the Intermediate Doubles, pick your own partner.
I was initially going to try the co-ed, but the partner got scared, then landed another intermediate player I was pretty good friends with, that is real easy going.
First day- Best Score, Worst disc
With Best Score you played the hole both individually. Between the two of you, you wrote down the lowest score on the hole. This was a good format to start a tournament. Get warmed up, and have to play a full round of all shots you will encounter.
With Worst Disc you both had to throw and the opponent picked the shot. This also meant that both partners had to make the putt in order to hole out.
Even in intermediate, nobody had a problem calling the worst shot in the situation. Everyone is trying to score well, and one team that shot a -8 one round can shoot a +15 in worst disc. There was one time I saw a group toss it in the water maybe 300' down the fairway. The partner stepped up an basically let go of the disc, maybe rolled 5 feet past the teepad. The other group had them shoot from the teepad again, and sure enough, landed in the water almost the same exact spot.
If you realize that everyone is having bad rounds, this can turn into a fun time. I believe the key was to be about the same skill level partners with decent overall aspects of your game, and to be selective/consistent. We matched each other pretty well and shot a good round. Had a few bogeys and one double bogey but picked up a lot more pars and a couple birdies that others didn't. There were a few teams that really got into arguments, but the fact this came as the last round of day 1, it made it easy to disappear, get on with your day and come back the next ready to go again.
This is a slow round. Bring a stool.
Second Day- Best Shot, Alternate Shot
Best Shot was your standard best shot doubles.
Basically your warm-up round before entering alternate shot.
Alternate Shot was just as it sounded. You chose who drove first, then every shot after changed. If they holed out, you drove the next one.
This was the final round of the doubles championship. This round seemed to sneak up on quite a few teams. You actually saw more arguments between teams during this round, due to it being competitive. If someone tagged a tree directly in front of them, that was rough having the exact same shot over again.
All said though, this format was a fantastic experience even with it being my first official tournament, even as intermediate, I had a blast.
People that would give the other twosome whichever lie they want, should just leave so they don't mess with other people's scores. I would be real pissed off to see someone do that and write down they shot a +2 or something when really it was a +13.
