Learning from doubles

Does anyone else like to play doubles? I feel like I've learned more playing doubles than doing anything else. It's been cool to play with people who are much better players than me, and the biggest thing I've noticed is that usually better players may not throw further, or hit longer putts, but they just make less mistakes.

I had one of my best rounds so far this morning, and was only one stroke worse the last two times out, and I attribute it mostly to just not trying to make stupid shots. I've been throwing mids and putters a lot more, and only threw a driver as fast as speed 10 once today. I'm not throwing for any more distance than I have been, I've just been making less mistakes. I'm excited to see my game improving, and a lot of it's from paying attention while playing doubles.

the two things that had a very large impact on my game were playing doubles and playing for money (albeit $1.00 9 hole impromptu tourneys, etc... small amounts)

RE: Doubles
This helped me play a "consistent" and stable game. I'm at the level that my partner (unless he's a player on the next level, aka top tier amateur or pro) doesnt play any "better" than me except for the fact that he's more consistent; we both throw as far, make (generally) the same shots, but his throw seems to have a higher level of consistency. This helps a lot as a lot of energy / throwing experience is wasted when you have to take unorthodox throws from the brambles, bad lies, short drives, slight shanks, etc. The consistency between the two of us always makes for a very competitive round. Between the two of us, we are usually good enough to make the winner "earn" their money, but we wont collapse or give it away either. We'll always get par and get a few birdies along the way. Consistent drives means consistent shots for #2 and #3. The other thing that helped me, is that i play a very conservative method; as a result i have few opportunities to experiment with shots (except when i play solo). When my partner has a good shot, it allows me to play "outside my comfort zone" and be a lot more aggressive.

RE: Money
This helped me a lot as it put a risk/reward strategy system into my game. Not so much for me, but for a lot of people i play with, the fact that $ is involved makes them play more conservative and actually helps their game. It's amazing how taking a slow and steady approach, rather than a wild take risk approach, usually leads to better scores. I play with a lot of guys who have longer drives and a slightly (overall) better game, but i beat them every time because they have a 1-2 hole "meltdown" per round. (ie. OB, Overpowered disc into tree, overshoot basket trying to make a super long putt, etc...)

Playing with better players is always a valuable learning experience for me, whether it's seeing different lines people take, or watching for technique, or seeing what kind of strategy those players use on various holes. Doubles is as good a place to play with better players as any.

I entered a doubles draw the night before a tournament. Random and I drew a really good player, way better then me. We nearly always played his shots and as a result won $50! I was lucky enough to paly with him and learned a lot. Would definately like to play more doubles events. A good experience.

Doubles is so much fun. We used to have a 5 dollar buy in doubles random draw after leagues if there was enough light.

doubles is a great learning venue while playing. here in charlotte we have some top notch pros , most of which are more than willing to answer any questions you ask, or give you advice on technique and strategy. i would recommend doubles to everyone who wants to improve their game. plus it is a little more relaxed as far as the stress level.

One of the things that I like about doubles is that since it takes birdies win both players need to run at every putt, so it encourages me to get more agressive putting.

Thtas how I learned. I got tired of donating and started paying attention and really watching better players

i personally love playing doubles. i haven't been playing too long and playing with guys who have some experience has definitely improved my game. just watching what other guys are doing and trying to incorporate that into my game has given me better scores and a ton more confidence.
