Etymology of the word "Shule"

Seriously. This has been driving me nuts since I first got into disc golf.

Where the hell does the word "shule" come from?

I have scoured the internet to no avail. The best thing I could find merely stated that shule is slang for undergrowth/bushes/trees/etc. It seems odd that the word is so widespread (i.e., not regional slang) so it must have been around for quite a while.

Google reveals that shule seems to be used in conjunction with Jewish learning centers, but this seems entirely unrelated. Wiki is no help, either. Searched the DGCR forums and also didn't find a thing.

So help a frustrated linguist out here, peeps....

Any one know the origin of this word?!

Nah, shule isn't NW indy...it's too widespread. I've seen it pop up in reviews all over the place.

Any of the older, wiser heads amongst us remember when you first heard this term? Is it relatively new or something that dates back to the Dark Ages of DG?

i remember reading or hearing that one of the "old pros" or someone came up with the term, but don't remember why they chose it...interesting question.

DGCR was the first place that I heard it, too. I actually tried to look it up myself a while back to make sure that I was spelling it right. Of course, it wasn't in my copy of Merriam-Webster's.

Ah! Our first lead. Can anyone else substantiate this claim? Better yet does anyone remember which "old pro?"

That's a great point, Jimb! Actually, I'm not even entirely sure I am spelling it correctly. I've seen other versions of it: schule, shoule (?). I assumed those were just misspellings because the majority of the time it appears as previously written. But I guess there is the possibility of it being misspelled.

Edit: for what it's worth, I've searched the death out of the alternative spellings as well...
