I'll give you the range of responses:
aerobie epic - you'll either love it or hate it - I'd stay away from this because it lacks consistency
discraft flick or flash - many rave about these
innova firebird - innovas more popular hammer disc

I use my hammer all the time and I use an innova destroyer

I would say the best discs for hammer throws are as listed below.

Long Distance/High Winds - Innova Star Monster
Long Distance Accuracy - Discraft Predator
Midrange - Innova Cro

in a very general sense ... any overstable fairway or longrange driver should work.
I personally use a beatup dx Wraith since I dont care what kind of damage it takes ... for more accurate tomahawks I use a firebird. If you get a chance Id also learn to throw the thumber throw. its similiar to a tomahawk but puts a different spin on the disc.

I'd recommend going to an open field and try throwing tomahawks/thumbers with all your discs to see how they fly. As valkyriefb menioned, any overstable driver will do the trick. I recently discovered throwing a thumber is the oposite of a tomahawk, kinda like backhand is to forehand.

My favorite discs to throw with a thumber (which has been my bread and butter over the years) are:

Trackers
Predators
Avengers
Teebirds

I still can't throw a tomahawk for distance to save my life but I can put a thumber fairly accurate about 300' consistently.

For distance Star Firebird.

For closer range Star Teebird. It flips more quickly

Why is overstable better?

The teebird definitely does flip sooner than the other ones I throw thumber. It is also more likely to skip on landing for me where as the trackers and avenger tend to roll. Sometimes I can get lucky and milk an extra 15-20'.
