Perkerson Park Atlanta, GA
This has been a long time coming, but Perkerson Park in Atlanta, GA is on its way to becoming a permanent course. There is already a listing on this website *under temporary courses* as the course is setup on a weekly/monthly basis for league and tourney play.
We're shooting for a permanent version similar to the temp course, which would be a championship caliber blue-level course with Gateway Titan baskets. The reason for my post is that part of the planning process is collecting community input via an online survey that is open until 6/20/2011. So if you've ever played the course, or live nearby, or intend to play it in the future, please complete the survey to provide your input. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/perkersonpark |

**IMPORTANT**
Please, PLEASE, everyone - regardless of your proximity to the park - please take a few minutes on this survey. This is an amazing park that John, and many, many other dedicated folks, have been lobbying for 2+ years to get a course in the ground.
If you are from the area - you know how AWESOME the temp course has been. If you have not played the course - voting will bring you and everyone else one step closer to playing at your convenience and not just during scheduled league events. If you have never been to ATL - please vote and plan to make a trip sometime in the near future and enjoy all the park has to offer. /end rant

Done. Please take the time to take this survey. This land was built for disc golf. I can't wait until I can come back and play this again. Titans is a good idea. Hopefully the city goes all out here.

Boy do I hope this course becomes permanant in the near future. I've heard the park is tailored for disc golf and it's actually in the city limits. Reading the reviews and looking at the pictures of this gem made me drool. Please post again if there's anything we disc golfers can do to help the development of the process to becoming one of the best courses in Georgia.

Thanks for the PM ... here is an overdue update. The survey reflected very strong levels of support for the course and we've been going through the master planning process since July. The master plan is being developed around the disc golf course as a core feature of the park. We're still fine tuning it now and down to just a few contentious areas, like around current #14-16. The course will be very different than the layout everyone knows. Holes 1-5 gone. Most/all of the holes along the creek subject to change. They've basically said we can't use the flat, open areas that we currently use ... but we can use the wooded areas, so there will be 6 holes in the woods. And we're master planned for an awesome tract of ~11 acres that's adjoins the park downstream, so when that comes available the course can grow. I'm pushing hard to get enough land for a legit 18-hole course that's close to the current par 61, but it could be shorter initially. We'll see soon. I think long term the course will be better than the temp course (long term = after that tract is acquired).
The city told me at our last meeting that they need it installed by February. The baskets have been purchased and delivered to the city (that's 19 Titan Pros with 55 sleeves). We're walking through next week with the city officials for an initial proposed layout, so more updates soon. Thanks for the support! Also if you are local and really want to help, you'll be needed once we get the green-light. It's completely on the local DG community to install it ... look for workdays this winter! |

Thanks for the quick reply. Wow...great news! It sounds like the wheels are definitely rolling. It's so exciting for the Atlanta disc golf community and I'm sure the gratitude will be felt for all the people that made it happen. I for one would love to help where ever it is needed. I'm positve that I know a few who would be honored to help as well. Thanks for everythiing you do. I know the process has been extensive and time consumming to say the least. Keep us updated and we'll rally the troops to help this course set its foundation.

John I'm glad to hear the good news about the park! I'm really sad about the creek holes going away though... those were some of the best risk/reward type holes on the course!
Wish I could be there to help install... Perkerson is definitely one of my favorite layouts.

That's some great news, ITP Atlantans will finally have somewhere close by to play. I can't wait to start putting some baskets in the ground.

Course was officially green lighted today. The great news is we get to keep the best hole on the course (#14 the peninsula hole). Bad news is we lose the area where 15/16 play. But we will get to use the area where #4/5 currently play and the basketball court will be relocated.
Should be a solid course, at least par 60, and keeping much of the feel of the current course -- so if you've played before, you shouldn't be let down by the permanent configuration although it will be completely different. If you live in Atlanta, we'll be having workdays throughout the winter to install the course. Install is 100% volunteer based and on the local disc golfers. |
