If the question is how to get on TV, I have it figured out. There's all kinds of obscure sports on tv - you know - jousting, noodling, lumber jacks, sharp shooting etc. Most of which I'm sure have less of a participation level than DG (or I'm completely ignorant on how popular some of these things are). All in lame reality TV format.

What we need is - a couple teams of DGers somehow competing against each other, maybe a big bus to tour the country, eliminating each other with a variety of disc related competition and some obscure voting procedure. And of course a bunch of crazy drama. Last person standing wins $100K.

Easiest way is to get a Reality show. Seems pretty easy to get one nowadays. Watch 5 minutes of one about jousting tonight. I learned that when jousting doesn't feature Heath Ledger and Alan Tudyk it is pretty boring.

If you think courses are too crowded get involved and help get more courses in the ground.

I do agree that some obscure "sports" are making it on tv, I do not agree that sharp shooting is less popular than disc golf.... EVERY kid I know, at least once, has at least tried to hit a soda can with a bb gun. That is the very beginning of sharp shooting. I do know plenty of kids who have never thrown a Frisbee or golf disc around, hell, I've met grown men, when thrown a Frisbee, can not even make a half decent attempt to throw it back

P.S. I'm in for the traveling bus for 100k, I will start shooting my audition tape tomorrow

In an episode of Disc Golf Live called "Don't Be Last" (#21) a few years ago, I did a take on this theme while covering a play-in for the last USDGC spot between several players, all tied at the end of last chance Monday. The playoff went into OT, if I remember correctly, when Larry Bledsoe canned a giant putt on #18 at Winthrop to knot things up. (That putt made the latest version of my show's opening montage if anyone is interested in seeing that shot.) In my hypothetical show, players would travel around the country in a sweet RV, with tournament outcomes and side contests leading to folks getting booted. Top dogs got the beds, others were stuck out in tents. Eventually only a couple guys would be left, but being disc golfers they'd decide to split the payout and sell the RV to throw a party for their pals.

Its not a stretch to imagine a show being built around our sport, but it would take good fortune (and a small fortune) to pull it off. Meanwhile, I invite others to join in my effort to build up our player base and overall public awareness, one community at a time.

Anyone interested in a no-cost DG themed TV show to submit to your local public access station for broadcast, give me a shout. There are local stations all over in most regions of the country, if you're in a community served by a station, please look into what it would take to submit a show for broadcast and then drop me a line.

Here's my Youtube channel, for those who haven't seen the show:

http://www.youtube.com/user/DiscGolfLive?feature=mhee

If you've got a story to share, I'd like to hear from you as well. DGL is seen on stations across the country, large and small.

Best regards,

Joe

Heh - sharpshooting was the only one in the back of my head when I changed the qualifier to "most". (lets see how much speculation I can put into this paragraph) Although I don't agree that EVERY kid has shot a gun - I know PLENTY of people that have never seen a real gun (including BB). Whether its against their family morals, they don't want to, or they just never came across the opportunity. In fact thinking back to high school. The number of people that have shot guns could be fairly close to the number of people that have thrown a frisbee. I'd be willing to bet that the same is true for the general public. Then the number of people that might consider themselves "recreational sharpshooters" I imagine is smaller than the recreational disc golf crowd and the number of serious competitors is smaller than serious disc golf competitors.

I bet the sharpshooter crowd would give the same speculations about this obscure disc golf thing...
