First disc with contact paper

My friend and I decided to try dying a couple discs last night. Hers is the orange Wraith. She left it in dye for about 8 mins, but the burner remained on and it cooked it a little bit. I took the pot off of the burner to do mine (peace slime), and only left it for 3 or 4 mins. Here is the process using contact paper, which is tough since it's clear and fairly limp once you peel the tape off, but it did work aside from a couple small runs toward the bottom. Thank you for all the info guys/gals.

Here's the Wraith

Interesting. Did the Wraith retain it's same shape after it was done being cooked, and have you trown it yet to see if it still flies the same?

I keep my dye on LOW/ simmer -- on the 1 to 10 scale, I keep it at 1-1.5.
At that level, the pan is hot, but I can touch it for a couple seconds before having to pull away. At this temp, a dye should take full-color saturation in about 10 minutes.
The hardest thing to do is BE PATIENT and don't take the disc out! Put up a timer and stick with it. Never set the stovetop very high, it's unnecessary.
Good work for first tries! Go find a local sign shop and ask them if they have any scrap sign vinyl -- if they don't, they're lying. You'll love it!

The Wraith has no dome to it now, it is flat as a pancake. She hasn't thrown it yet, and I'm not sure it's ever been thrown. We'll see if it flies today. I will try to find vinyl as I'd like to do a few more intricate discs.

Sweet no dome. Let me know how it flies.

i have done the same method with the same products. We used the 'barely on' heat, where we could touch the pot as wel and then pull away.

we left it in until the color was fully saturdated and we were happy. in some cases as long as 30 mins. aside from the cutting out of the image being difficult. I have happy with how all of my dyed discs have turned out. just make sure to re-press the edges of what you cut so that you get the least amount of bleeding possible

Do you know the best way to avoid runs when your design is close to the edge of the disc? The runs on mine came from crinkles in the paper where it wrapped around to the back side. I tried like hell to rub them out. Should I have cut them and re-stuck them instead?

when i first put the design on the disc, i use a credit card to start in the center and push everything to the very edge of the disc, after this is done i would go all around the disc crimping the edges so that i wouldnt get air back in. if you need to make relief cuts on the bottom of the disc, where all of the extra wrap goes, just make short slits to overlap the pieces

I'll try that. You rub the vinyl on the face of the disc before you wrap the edges? I just stuck it on, wrapped the edges, then rubbed with a card. I'll do it opposite tonight. Thanks again.
