i did the same yesterday as well, anything under ~350 i don't throw above a midrange unless the line is kinda weird

I wouldn't be able to park that hole with any disc. My aviar is going 225 or maybe 250 on a good drive, and my longest drivers rarely reach 300. I'm looking at having to take a second drive on practically every hole. That's double the risk. And occasionally getting 50 feet closer on that first drive doesn't seem to be worth the risk. I'm not parking any holes on my first drive unless they are in putter range anyway.

im going to go ahead and guess you "disced down" jenb. i had a similar issue after doing so; drivers not going much further than mids/putters

There is a guy from my area who plays with a Zephyr every round. I know it isn't a putter but it is close. He forehands every shot(even putts) with a zephyr no matter what and he isn't bad. He actually won Advanced Masters at a local tournament recently.

I have a friend here that runs a one disc tournament 3 to 4 times a year to help raise money towards the B tier tournament he runs in September. It is called the Deuce Bowl. It is played at the local Rec course. The discs we have used vary from a 1080 Radius, JK Aviar, Champion Cro, ESP Wasp, R-Pro Dart, soft Banger-GT, Soft Focus, and Glow KC Pro Aviar. The event usually is pretty quick and usually has good attendance.

Seems like Jen is talking about competing in tournaments where everyone else is carrying whatever they want.

If you're actually averaging 2 or 3 strokes less per round, then you should probably give it a try. A smart golfer, who also wants to win, plays the numbers. Only you know what your percentages are though. It's all about the cliche, "playing within yourself" and playing what the course is giving you.

Once you reach a certain skill level, you're limiting yourself by only throwing a putter. But, maybe that's all you need to win the tournament you're playing in.

However, when crunch time comes, the pressure starts mounting, and you shank one in the tourney, the Aviar is much less forgiving than something with a little more speed and stability. Say everyone else just threw a Firebird into that 25 mph wind on hole 18. Even the bad shots are 200' closer to the hole than the turd you just dropped with your Aviar. Kind of a situation where you have to decide what a "good" miss is on the hole you're playing.

Time to do some serious field work with only your drivers. Look sto me as if you have been discing down to a point where you have control over only your putters ^^

I remember a blog post from Yeti where he talked about using a Aviar the whole time on a difficult hole for the USDGC and ended up scoring better than half of the lead card.

Quote:
I took a total of 21 strokes on hole #11 this week as I just struggled staying in bounds trying to crack the code of this hole. The lead card on Friday went 3, 4, 5, 5. I pulled out a Star Aviar today and casually scored a very easy Par 4 just throwing that disc. Ha,Ha,Ha.

Throwing slower discs during a tournament is a full realization that you're sacrificing distance for accuracy and consistency. That's what slower discs do, and that's why everyone should learn to throw many more shots with putters and midranges on the course.

There have been many times that I've shot as well, or better, with midranges and/or putters than I do when I carry a full bag.

If you're comfortable with the trade off of distance for accuracy and consistency (which most people would be, at least in theory) then by all means play with the putters you're most confident with. Just feeling like you can make a shot is winning half of the battle already. In a tournament setting, it takes a lot of stress and extra thinking out of the equation.

i did a pro d zone only round at my local course last week, with 2 brand new discs and was only off a couple of strokes from when carrying my full bag, dont think i would do it in a tourney but it is something to think about...
