Ace Race in Cleveland, WI (halfway between GB and Milw)

Hey everyone,

It's getting close to the deadline for pre-registration for the Ace Race at LTC Cleveland on Sept. 27, 2009, at noon. Please register ASAP if you plan on playing, or message/e-mail me if you are definitely coming but can't pre-register by this weekend. I'm only ordering one batch of player's packs, so I need to have a good idea of how many I'll need (last year I was much more financially stable to pre-order in anticipation of X number of walk-ups; however, this year with a baby on the way and less work, money is tighter and I won't be able to order a bunch of extras in the hopes people will show up).

Thanks!

Jason

What's the disc supposed to be like this year?

Trifocal, the way an ace race works is everyone gets one throw on each hole, and just tries to get an ace. Thats it, you dont play the hole like normal, just go for it off every tee. You play two rounds of 18 "holes" this way, the one with the most aces is the winner, with how many times you hit metal ie basket used as a tiebreaker. Its really laid back and alot of fun. Also, everyone gets a new prototype disc that is previously unreleased.

The disc this year is a putter, so expect the holes to be pretty short (I'll actually be setting up two sets of tees, with shorter tees for juniors and rec women). I've read in other Ace Race threads out here that the prototype is similar to a Gateway Magic--correct me if I'm wrong on that, anyone! You get 2 of these prototypes, and this year is unique in Ace Race history in that you will get 2 different types of plastic, Pro D and ESP.

Trifocal, although Tex described the Ace Race rules to a T up above, I may provide an option to buy mulligans (something like $10 for 6 mulligans through the round), but I'm still on the fence with that one. Obviously if I did that, there'd be the issue of a first-shot ace trumping any mulligan aces, but if there were no first-shot aces the mulligan aces would then determine the winner.

Another thing I might do differently this year with the disc being a putter is set up some "pressure putt" tees (i.e. within putting distance, but with a significant obstacle or situation to get out of so it's not just a textbook putting situation). This is only my 2nd year doing an Ace Race, but hopefully things will go as well as they did last year.

I'm here if you need me for anything else!

Eh, I don't really like the idea of mullligans, takes away from the whole "ace race" aspect. The pressure putt idea sounds interesting, though.

I'm with Ben. Mulligan is a word that will always leave a bad taste in my mouth regardless of the situation.

Plus you can never really know who the d-bag will be who buys an assload of mulligans and is taking 4 shots per hole while everyone else is standing around.

It's great to get some feedback on that idea before I implemented it! Had I gone with it, I would've capped people at 6 per round, and you would only be able to throw one mulligan per hole (since you've only got 2 discs to play the whole event with). I actually got the idea by hearing about another Ace Race that used this, and while it's probably a great fundraiser, I certainly don't want to piss people off and should keep the playing field as level as possible.

BTW Ben, thanks for the registration! See ya there!

When I ran the ace race in Monterrey, Mexico last year, one thing we did that was super fun was this. Since everyone only throws 36 shots, total, the whole Ace race, it goes pretty fast, so we had a mini-tourney after the ace race, where everyone played with just their ace race discs.

In our case we did a custom 9 holes (temp baskets) of alt-shot handicap doubles, but you could just do random draw doubles, or singles on the normal course layout. Or handicapped doubles based on # of aces and metal hits. We found it really got everyone to learn the disc well, since it forced them to use it for every kind of shot. Also, since the disc is new to everyone, its a great equalizer of sorts.

We also kept track of CTPs on each hole in the ACe race, and gave a prize for the person with the most CTP's, and the one with the most metal hits (non ace).

I agree that mulligans would be a bad idea, especially in a tournament like the ace race where first prize is so huge, the guy in second who took no mulligans would be pissed at the jerk who beat him using five.

Im pretty sure id like to play in your ace race. How do I get signed up?

I kicked around the idea of doing a post-Ace-Race event, but with how busy I am that whole weekend with my son's birthday, I think we'll only have time and resources for the Ace Race and the raffle.

We did do 1st-round CTPs last year, where Burger King gave 18 coupons for things like double whoppers, large onion rings, shakes, and things, so after the 1st round we handed out all the BK stuff, and some people ended up hitting a couple CTPs, so they had a free lunch coming!...the BK in Cleveland has since gone under, but in its place is an independently-owned greasy spoon run by the same managers that'll probably do something similar.

I don't know if we'll break last year's participation of 34 players since hardly anybody has pre-registered and I can only swing so much out-of-pocket to order the player's packs, but I'm ordering at least 20 packs...hopefully more if the mailbox or PayPal account suddenly swells with registrations at the last minute (which I know is a bit of a trend with DG events!).

I just wanted to give a huge thanks to Jason for putting on this event again this year! I had a blast (even though I didn't win) and I even won a few things out of the raffle afterwards! A mini-tourney would have been nice afterwards, but while I was driving home it starting pouring rain, so maybe it's good we didn't! Looking forward to next year's already! (Hopefully not on a Sunday again!)
