Temporary Course Design

Would like to set up a small tournament or something in one of the many parks nearby. This could just be a way of playing something different every once in awhile. So, I was wondering, what do you look for in a park for a temp course? Also, what would I have to do as far as getting it approved through the parks and rec?

I imagine the makings of a good temp course would have good terrain, lots of mature trees, well manicured land, and water (or 2nd best, lightly used streets/paths as artificial OB). A safe place where baskets left unattended (during lunch - not overnight) would not get stolen would be necessary, of course.

You would want something that you could set down baskets in and not have to do any trimming/limbing and yet have challenging holes that are interesting and varied.

As far as getting approval from Parks and Rec, you'll need to apply for something along the lines of a "Large Gathering in a Park" permit. This is similar to a permit that you need to rent a pavillion or picnic area, but will let you use however much of the park you need for your course.

If you go the official parks and rec route; you may be required to pay insurance. I ran a temp tourney that cost me $250 in insurance; eventhough the insurance agent didn't charge me....and that was many years ago; probably costs more these days.

Well, we will probably host the first one unofficially with some friends from the local club. If that goes well, then we will look at the possibility of using the setup for a sanctioned tournament of some sort. Thanks for the replies. I have narrowed the search down to just a few parks. Our first temp tourney might just actually be at a park that we will be putting a new permanent course in the end of this year.
