What typically happens is players start looking sometimes for as long as 3-5 minutes until someone says it's time to put the clock on it. Then they get the official 3 more minutes at that time.

That's my experience, especially when a disc was thrown in an area where it should be easy to find and magically disappears. Player thinks he'll find it in 10 seconds, well, 30 seconds, well, it's gotta be right here, well, start the clock.
