Starting a Course, From Cradle to Grave

I want to get a course in the city of Ann Arbor. I just moved here, but have been wanting to do this for a long time.

So, starting from finding a site, pitching the idea with benefits to the City, to getting it installed and playable, is there an article, thread, or any other literature here that I can use as a reference?

Thanks for any input.

Send a message via AIM to B3NDER
If you DO get a course set up, us local Michiganders would love to come give it a try

Good luck my friend!

Contact an experienced, competent course designer. Check the PDGA Course Designers Group for one near you.

Terry Calhoun can give you the scoop on Ann Arbor. I'm certain the A3 club members have been trying to get a course there for many years and maybe there's something in the pipeline. Terry is at: splendid at umich.edu Good luck.

if you haven't designed, or worked on a course before - I would first recommend puttingin a few years volunteering under some one that has - they can teach you the nuances of good design and explain how to avoid failures and previous design mistakes...
If you have been working on courses for a while, get to meet the local golfers and find out what efforts have been made, who are the key players in the area, and that may point you in a new direction as some places may have been proposed and turned down, others may working on approval. See who and what is in the works if you are new to the area.

I relocated from DE to NJ about 18 months ago, found that there were very limited courses and none near my new home. But in meeting locals, I found that a proposal was in the works from a local (and relatively new disc golfer) who had all the local contacts needed to get a course approved. Turns out, he needed an experienced golfer, willing to design, and with time to install the course. Together our team work has a 9 hole in the ground, and it should be approved for 18 holes early next year. But that's just my recent story...
