Skins Tournament

Howdy folks. Some guys in my local club have been talking about starting up a little monthly skins tourney over the winter. What do you think of the proposal below? Is it clear what's happening? Any suggestions? If you're anywhere near Rocky Mount, NC, come on out and join us!

---
THE SKINS YOURNAMENT IS ON!
We've talked about this for awhile and I think all the bugs have been worked out. It's time to give this a try.

WHEN:
Second Sunday each month at 1 pm
Courses to rotate at random
October 11 will be at Sunset

FORMAT:
Two rounds, single course, no handicaps
First round is a qualifying round
Top half after qualifying plays round two for skins ($1 a hole)
Bottom half plays round two for plastic (pays 1 unit to half the field)

$5 entry ($6 non-club members)
Optional $1 Ace Pool

All 50/50 splits round up, so if seven people turn out, we round the skins flight up to 4 players and we round the plastic payout up to two. So... with seven players: first round, random draw flights. We split the field for round two, with the four lowest scores playing $1 a hole skins and the three highest scores playing for plastic (1 unit to the two best scores). If thirteen people came out to play, we'd have seven players playing for skins (in two flights) and six players playing to win one of the three units of plastic up for grabs. Maximum flight size is five. Whenever skin flights are uneven (like one flight of 3 and another with 4), the lowest qualifying scores play in the smaller flight. If only four or five players turn out, there will be no qualifying round and everyone plays for skins.

If there are unclaimed skins at the end of the second round, it's sudden death for the skins players. Keep up or die. Say four players are playing for skins. On the first playoff hole we have two birdies and two pars. The two pars are out and the birdies move on to the next hole.

I am planning a six month trial period for this format. We'll run the skins tournament monthly through March and then evaluate whether to continue. There's no big pay out for anyone (not counting the Ace Pool) but plenty of opportunity for everyone to win something. I'm running this tournament to offer a chance to play something a little different that sounds like fun. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions and I hope you will come out to give this format a try.

Special Note: November starts on a Sunday. To avoid playing the Skins Tourney on the day after the monthly singles, the November Skins will be on 11/15 (the third Sunday instead of the second).

If you know how the skins format works, you can skip this part
HOW THE SKINS FORMAT WORKS
Playing for skins is a type of "match play" instead of the typical "stroke play". Our singles and doubles tournaments are stroke play, where your score is the total of the throws (strokes) you've made. Match play plays each hole as a separate contest. To win the hole (and take the skin it's worth), you must beat everyone else on your card. If there is a tie for the best score on the hole, no one wins it. The skins for tied holes carry over to the next hole. Imagine Andy, Bob, Clyde, and Dan are playing $1 a hole skins. On hole 1, Andy and Clyde got twos, Bob shot a 3, and Dan had a bogey 4. No one won this hole, so hole 2 is worth two skins ($2). On hole two, Dan hits a birdie and everyone else shot par. Dan wins the $2 and hole 3 will be worth $1 again. There's a tie for best score on hole 3. In fact, there is a tie for best score on holes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. So hole # 9 is worth $7. Clyde hits an Ace on hole 9, wins the $7 skin, and kicks himself for not buying into the Ace Pool. Hole 10 is worth $1.

That sounds like fun! I wish we still had a disc golf club around here...there is one...but the leaders all tookoff...we still have the plastic and club money but no one is stepping up nor handing over leadership....this sounds like a good idea and I wish we could use it...we just do Best Shot Doubles league mondays and tuesdays which are nice..but we don't have a very high attendance towards the end...anyways, keep us up to date on how it turns out!!!

Sounds like a blast and will be a break from traditional singles and doubles. Strategy is a little different for skins. Good luck sonny

Our club has a Tuesday Tag Toss for fun on Tuesdays. In season, we were playing three cards sometimes but only three players came tonight. The stroke score tonight was +1, +2, and +9. In match play the score would be 9, 7, and 1, with the final hole tied. Either way, everyone kept their tag.

I defended my #6 tag despite taking a five on the sure birdie hole #2. A loss would have stuck me with # 21.
