Brainwave-Like Disc Dyeing

I messaged an old friend who did a successful coolaid dye to find out what he added to the coolaid. My guess was he just mixed it with rit anyway.

ok so I went and got some of the mcquires tire gel stuff and allow me to say that it definately isnt the consistency I thought it would be...its more like dish soap consistency, which isnt necessarily a bad thing but still in line with the stuff we have already dealt with. The bright side is it does have the grape smell. The only thing I am concerned with it however is that on the back label it says to keep away from things that you dont want slippery and I began thinking of it, this stuff likely is oil based some how which will be good for the dye to not stick kinda but it also makes me wonder about how its gonna effect the plastic and if it will leave it slippery

ive been reading into this and wanted to possibly suggest the ideas of dying vasilene or hair gels? I would think the gel would get hard and not evaporate, and the vasilene might be good for something.

probably been tried already or thought of, just wanted to try and contribute

I think I have some clear hair gel at home, I might give that a try tonight, good idea B&W...........

maybe thinning some of the stronger holding gel with some water to deepen the colors and then just speeding up the drying process with a hair dryer. I would assume there would be a little bit of shrink during the hardening process, but worth a shot

It seems like I have tried everything else, so why not..... For the record, freezing the disc with the s/c/bwave dye design on them didn't seem to work at all on my end.....

if you're looking to go "thicker" - try some hair pomade - a lot thicker than gel, but could potentially work.

I also remember Jeff mentioning a laundry list of items he used as carriers (sodium alginate, mashed potatoes, etc) - but can't find where it was posted...

I'm guessing the grape smell is coming from a "pre-bath" soak...

I doubt its kool aid. If it was, the discs would smell different, but they all smell of grape

Jeff mentioned so many things it's hard to tell which ones he used, which ones were what he "used to use" or if he was just trying to mess with everybody. =-)
