I've always thrown Thumbers with max weight or close to it, just because of the wind. I also don't like switching to a lighter weight disc because it seems to disrupt the timing and snap.
My disc of choice for a thumber is a nice flat Firebird. For max distance I found the Nuke OS is good, although the rim is pretty big and harder to get a firm grip. The flight is also different. I have also had some pretty long thumbers with the early run XXX |

I also agree that the heavier weights are obviously gonna have better control in the wind.
