Different Valkyries
Ive been looking at Valks for a little bit now because Its a nice slow driver and its just something I've wanted to try. Im really not ready to bag a driver yet, but I can still accumulate some and mess with them in the field I suppose. Ill definitely be able to grow into one.
I see all different kinds though. Obviously the CE ones are interesting but they can be expensive and there is tons of info out there on them. The intriguing ones are the JK pros though. I see 4xs and 5xs. Ive read that some of the 4xs have CE plastic in them, some don't. Don't really know about the 5xs. So I guess the question is how do the 4xs compare to the 5xs? What do people prefer? What about a bit beat in vs newish condition? |

If you're just starting out throwing drivers, don't worry about trying to track down rare or specialty ones. Just get a regular production one and get to know it first.

well there are two molds:
Valkyrie-X (Later known as Viking) Valkyrie (well call it L for this) Now the Runs: CE and 3x - Good and stable. My favorite Valks. Could bomb! them with hardly any turn. As Birdman said these vwere also way more stable than the newer runs. 4x - Early 4x were similar to 3x but later runs of them were fliippy. These are very glidey though. 5x - Absolute garbage. Blunt noise and no glide....wouldn't even call it a Valk.

On the other hand, I think the zipper top 5x's are straight as an arrow and great fairway drivers. The last bit of 5x's and the new ones have more of an s to the flight in my opinion.

A disc with very small concentric rings like an old record that make a "zipper" noise when you run your fingernail over the top of the disc.

I picked up an 168g Xtra Gummy Champion Valkyrie from the pro shop. I like it for the plastic if not it's flight. Great in the cold.

If you're looking at all Valks I suggest trying an old opaque pre JK(no name). The ones that are flat, completely solid in color, grippy, and usually under $10 shipped. I use them for straight shots when thrown on a slight hyzer, shorter dog leg lefts, long turn overs that require a sharper hook right at the end, or easy distance with a tailwind. And since you're from MI too they're great in the snow, the solid color really pops.

Any Valk is going to work fo ryou, for the record. It's a great disc for any begginer...sound slike you've played more than one round before, so I say you're ready!
One word of advice is to not get the regular Pro Valks. For some reason, they just fly like crap.
