I've always just picked spots on my local courses rather than worrying about an exact distance. If there's a hole you can't quite reach, or a specific tree or ditch on a long hole that's just out of your range, make that your target. Once you hit that target consistently, pick a new one that's just out of your new range.

Get a measuring wheel. They are not too expensive and might come in handy someday for other things.
Or use the trip meter in your car. .1 miles is 528 feet. Try to use some land marks to estimate the 100 foot increments.

I actually stopped using the cones a long time ago. But, they work really well, if you want to know how far you're throwing.

These days, I work on accuracy, not distance. I'll pick a tree roughly 150-200 feet away, and try and park the disc right at the base of the trunk. Then I'll move back 50 feet, and do it again.

If I never throw farther than 300 feet, so be it. But, I better be able to put the disc where I want it to be able to succeed at this game.

get yourself a few hundred feet of string... like a spool or something. few bucks at any hardware store... u can measure off x distance at home and just lay it out in the field you throw in.

i did this, measured off 500 ft and then i marked every 25ft with a marker on the white string. works well.

The best thing I've ever done is the measuring wheel and cones every 50ft from 100ft out to 400ft. Play all discs with straight shots, hyzers (& hyzer spikes), and anhyzers to see what your range is AT ALL DISTANCES.

Practice putting. Do not stop putting. Develop a putting style.

I was playing with a friend this weekend. I can drive a good 20-40ft past him, but our score was pretty much the same (I beat him by one). The reasons: He is excellent at upshots and made all his putts, I screwed up about 4 putts from totally make-able ranges.

The one thing I think that gets ignored by new players is practicing upshots. I've seen guys learn to drive pretty well, then overthrow their basket on their upshots constantly. This is usually the combination of using the wrong disc and having no idea of their short range game.

Anybody else have this problem? - I seem to throw much better distance on the course (any given course) when I'm more focused on line-shaping and placement than when I get to a big open hole (or field practice) and I'm trying to bomb them.

Was at Blue Ribbon Pines this past weekend, the conditions were fair but not great, and I was extremely pleased with how I've progressed from the summer...until I got to the gigantic 900' hole w/ the distance markers. I think I just wanted to rip em' out SOOO far that I failed at keeping proper form.

Anybody else have this happen to them?

maybe they dont do this everywhere but most baseball fields are longer than a football field and most of them i go to have the distances marked on the fences. also remember a lot of soccer fields are 130 yards not 100. i was really kicking myself for a while till i found out i was throwing on a soccer field that was almost 400 feet.

Actually, few fields are longer than 120 yards.

Only official soccer fields are that long. Almost all soccer fields that are played on by non professionals are your standard football field. If you want to accurately measure your distance easy just use google maps, find the field where you are throwing, use the distance tool and measure it off.
